What separates the top no contract home security picks?

All five systems here are contract-free and the equipment is yours. The scores split on monitoring speed, price and how much the system does beyond the alarm.

Ring Alarm scores 9.2 at $249. Its three-year monitored total is $969, the cheapest of the monitored systems, and its cameras and doorbell footage are the best in this group. The trade-off is a 41-second median response, 11 seconds behind SimpliSafe, and camera recording needs its own subscription tier.

SimpliSafe scores 9.1 at $249 and had the fastest monitoring response in the test: a median 30 seconds from alarm to the monitoring centre calling. It installed in 50 minutes with no tools beyond the adhesive strips. Cameras trail Ring and Arlo, and automation is limited to Alexa and Google basics.

Abode scores 8.7 at $279. It is the only system here with proper Apple HomeKit support, and its Z-Wave and Zigbee radios talk to sensors and locks the others ignore. Its 47-second median response is the slowest of the monitored systems, and setup assumes more technical confidence than SimpliSafe.

Cove scores 8.6 at $229, the cheapest monitored system here at $877 over three years. Its 36-second median response comes with a text that lands in about 10 seconds. App control needs the pricier Plus plan, and the cameras are basic.

Arlo scores 8.4 at $199, the cheapest kit. One sensor type covers motion, door contact, water leak, smoke-alarm listening and temperature. Its 52-second median response is the slowest in the test, and everything worthwhile needs the Arlo Secure subscription.

What should I check before buying a no contract system?

Monitoring response carries the most weight in our scoring at 30 points, so look at the median call time, not the marketing. Value is 20, equipment and coverage 20, contract terms 15 and installation and app 15.

  • Response time: 30 seconds for SimpliSafe, 36 for Cove, 41 for Ring, 47 for Abode, 52 for Arlo.
  • Three-year monitored cost: $877 for Cove, $969 for Ring.
  • Subscription traps: Ring camera recording and Arlo Secure both need their own tier; Cove app control needs the Plus plan.
  • Smart home: HomeKit, Z-Wave and Zigbee only on Abode.
  • Install: SimpliSafe took 50 minutes; Abode expects more technical confidence.

Questions about best no-contract home security systems

Is professional monitoring worth the monthly fee?
It is the difference between your phone buzzing and someone calling the police while you are asleep or abroad. In our test the monitoring centres called within 30 to 62 seconds of an alarm. If you will reliably see and act on a phone alert, self-monitoring with a system like Ring or Abode saves $20 to $60 a month. If nobody is watching the phone, pay for monitoring.
Do I still need a landline?
No. Every system here reports over broadband with a cellular radio as backup, and all seven kept reporting when we unplugged the router. Battery backup ran from 4 to 24 hours with the power cut.
What happens to the equipment if I cancel?
With SimpliSafe, Ring, Abode and Cove you bought the equipment and it is yours; most keeps working in self-monitored mode. ADT and Vivint sell long financed agreements where the equipment is tied to the contract, and leaving early means paying out the balance. Read that clause before the installer arrives.
How do you test home security systems?
The same eight-sensor layout goes into the same three-bedroom house: entry sensors on three doors, four window or motion sensors, and a keypad. We trigger the alarm ten times at different hours and log the seconds to the monitoring centre's call. We cut mains power and broadband separately, test the app and automations, and price equipment plus 36 months of monitoring.
