Best eSIMs for International Travel

Every iPhone from the XS onward, most Pixels from the 3, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Fold models support eSIM, and the phone must be carrier-unlocked. Check Settings before you buy: on iPhone look for Cellular then Add eSIM, on Android look for Network then SIMs then Add. A phone bought on a US carrier contract is often locked until it is paid off.

This matters more than price. Airalo and Nomad roam mostly onto T-Mobile and AT&T; Ubigi uses AT&T; Saily roams across several. T-Mobile is strong in cities and weaker in rural mountain areas; AT&T and Verizon cover more of rural America. If you are driving through national parks, pick an eSIM that reaches AT&T or Verizon and check the provider's own coverage page for your route.

Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only: your existing SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries data. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Wi-Fi calling for voice. Only a few plans include a usable US number, and we have marked which in the specs.

Each eSIM is bought through the normal public checkout and installed on the same unlocked handset. We record the time from payment to a working data connection, then run the same speed tests in the same three locations — a dense city centre, a suburb and a rural road — on the same days, and note which network the phone attached to. Cost per gigabyte is computed from the 10 GB plan price, or the nearest size.
