What separates the cheapest eSIM picks on this page?

Price is the easy part. The three plans here sit close together — US Mobile at $17.50, Nomad at $18, Ubigi at $22 — but they buy you different things.

US Mobile scores 8.6 and is the only one that acts like a real US carrier plan: a US phone number, calls and texts, and your choice of the Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T network. It is also United States only, so it stops working the moment you cross a border. Activation took nine minutes because of the identity check.

Ubigi scores 8.5 and is owned by Transatel (NTT), an operator rather than a reseller. It posted the fastest downloads of the seven in every location tested, and it is preinstalled on many recent laptops and tablets, so no QR code is needed. The trade-off: AT&T only, with no fallback if AT&T is weak where you are, and an app that is functional rather than pleasant.

Nomad scores 8.4 and wins on rate: $1.80 per GB, the lowest mainstream price here, and 20 GB for $32 brings it under $1.60 per GB for heavier users. It roams onto both T-Mobile and AT&T. Fewer countries than Airalo or Saily, and speeds were mid-pack in testing.

What should you check before buying a cheap eSIM?

The scoring criteria tell you what matters: coverage and network quality 30, price per gigabyte 25, setup and activation 15, flexibility 15, support 15.

  • Network fit. Ubigi runs on AT&T only. Nomad roams onto T-Mobile and AT&T. US Mobile lets you pick Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T.
  • Where you are going. US Mobile is United States only. Nomad covers fewer countries than Airalo or Saily.
  • How much data. Nomad's 20 GB for $32 drops the per-GB rate for heavy users.
  • Setup. Ubigi is preinstalled on many recent laptops and tablets. US Mobile's identity check added nine minutes.

Questions about cheapest esim data plans

Will an eSIM work on my phone?
Every iPhone from the XS onward, most Pixels from the 3, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Fold models support eSIM, and the phone must be carrier-unlocked. Check Settings before you buy: on iPhone look for Cellular then Add eSIM, on Android look for Network then SIMs then Add. A phone bought on a US carrier contract is often locked until it is paid off.
Which US network does each one use?
This matters more than price. Airalo and Nomad roam mostly onto T-Mobile and AT&T; Ubigi uses AT&T; Saily roams across several. T-Mobile is strong in cities and weaker in rural mountain areas; AT&T and Verizon cover more of rural America. If you are driving through national parks, pick an eSIM that reaches AT&T or Verizon and check the provider's own coverage page for your route.
Do I keep my phone number?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only: your existing SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries data. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Wi-Fi calling for voice. Only a few plans include a usable US number, and we have marked which in the specs.
How do you test eSIMs?
Each eSIM is bought through the normal public checkout and installed on the same unlocked handset. We record the time from payment to a working data connection, then run the same speed tests in the same three locations — a dense city centre, a suburb and a rural road — on the same days, and note which network the phone attached to. Cost per gigabyte is computed from the 10 GB plan price, or the nearest size.
