Frequently asked questions about employee monitoring software
Is employee monitoring legal in the US?
Generally yes on company-owned equipment, and the safe practice everywhere is written notice plus a clear policy. Connecticut and Delaware require written notice of electronic monitoring, and New York requires notice at hire to anyone whose telephone, email or internet use may be monitored. Recording calls brings separate two-party consent rules in California, Florida, Pennsylvania and others. This is general information, not legal advice — ask an employment lawyer before deploying anything here.
What is the difference between monitoring and workforce analytics?
Monitoring watches individuals: screenshots, keystrokes, sites visited. Analytics aggregates patterns: focus time, meeting load, workload balance. ActivTrak and Insightful lean analytics and give the worker their own dashboard; Teramind and SentryPC lean surveillance and support covert installation. The second kind damages trust faster than it raises output, and we scored accordingly.
Does monitoring actually improve productivity?
The evidence is mixed and depends entirely on how it is used. Teams told us the data was useful when it surfaced overload and unfair workload distribution, and corrosive when it was used to rank people by keystroke counts. If you are deploying to catch people rather than to fix a process, the software is not your problem.
How do you test monitoring software?
Each product is installed on five consenting machines — three Windows, one macOS, one Linux — for two weeks of ordinary work. Testers keep their own log of what they did. We compare the software's picture against that log, note what it missed on each platform, check what a worker can see about themselves, count what the default install collects, and price a 20-person team on the plan our test required.
