Squarespace (Core) review 2027
The best-looking templates in the test and an editor that keeps them looking that way — our test site was finished fastest and scored highest on mobile
Is the Squarespace Worth It?
Best website builder overall. Squarespace produced the best site in the least time, and it was still the fastest on a phone. For a small business, a portfolio or a blog with a modest shop it is the safe recommendation. Serious stores should go to Shopify.
Squarespace Pros & Cons
- Templates a designer would not be embarrassed by, and guardrails that stop you breaking them
- Fastest build in our test — 94 minutes
- Best mobile PageSpeed of the hosted builders
- Scheduling, memberships and email campaigns built in
- 2% transaction fee on Core; Plus is $39
- No free plan
- Fewer third-party apps than Wix
What problem does Squarespace solve for small businesses and creatives?
Squarespace is for people who need a site that looks designed rather than assembled. The templates are ones a designer would not be embarrassed by, and the editor's guardrails stop you breaking them, so the finished page still looks intentional after you have moved things around. In our test the same person built the test site in 94 minutes, the fastest build of the hosted builders we tested, and the finished site scored 88 on mobile PageSpeed, the best of that group. Scheduling, memberships and email campaigns are built in, so a studio taking bookings or a blogger collecting subscribers does not need to bolt on separate tools. It is the safe recommendation for a small business, a portfolio or a blog with a modest shop. Serious stores should go to Shopify.
How did we score Squarespace, criterion by criterion?
Design & templates: 24 out of 25. We judged template quality, how far the editor lets you change them, and how the site looked on a phone. Ease of use: 23 out of 25, based on how long the same person took to build the test site and how often the editor fought back. Features & ecommerce: 16 out of 20, covering blog, forms, bookings, shop, payments, transaction fees, apps and integrations. Performance & SEO: 13 out of 15, from PageSpeed scores of the finished site plus SEO controls, structured data and custom code. Value: 12 out of 15, judged on price over three years including a domain and any transaction fees, and what the free tier permits. That totals 8.8 overall, first of the eight website builders in this category.
Where does Squarespace stand out in testing?
The build time is the headline: 94 minutes for the test site, the fastest in our test. The mobile PageSpeed of 88 is the best of the hosted builders we tested. The template set is the other strength, and the editor's constraints are part of the design rather than a limitation you fight. Beyond the page itself, scheduling, memberships and email campaigns are included, which covers the common small-business jobs without extra subscriptions.
What is Fluid Engine and how does it work?
Fluid Engine is Squarespace's grid drag-and-drop editor. Instead of a single column of stacked blocks, the page is a grid: you drag an element to a cell and resize it across rows and columns, and the layout holds its shape at different screen widths. Because positions snap to the grid, elements line up with each other without manual spacing, which is what keeps a template looking like the template after you edit it. The trade-off is that you work inside the grid's rules rather than placing anything anywhere.
What do you get, and what does it cost to build with?
The plan structure is straightforward. Basic is $16/mo and Core is $23/mo, both billed yearly, with a free domain for the first year. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial. An online store is available on Core and up, with a 2% transaction fee on Core and 0% on Plus. The template library holds 180+. The editor is Fluid Engine, the blog is strong, and export is content only, as WordPress XML. Mobile PageSpeed measured 88.
How does Squarespace compare with Wix, Shopify and Hostinger?
Wix scored 8.4 and starts at $29/mo on Core, with a free plan, 900+ templates, 0% transaction fees with Wix Payments and mobile PageSpeed of 71. Wix gives you more freedom and more third-party apps; Squarespace gives you faster builds and a better phone score. Shopify scored 8.1 at $29/mo, with 200+ themes, 0% transaction fees with Shopify Payments and mobile PageSpeed of 79. Shopify is the store platform first and a website second, which is why our verdict sends serious stores there. Hostinger Website Builder scored 8.2 from $2.99/mo on a 48-month term, with 150+ templates plus AI generation, 0% transaction fees and mobile PageSpeed of 86. Hostinger is far cheaper on the long term; Squarespace is ahead on templates, build speed and phone performance.

Where does Squarespace fall short?
Value and ecommerce fees are where it lost points. The 2% transaction fee on Core is a real cost on every sale, and Plus, which removes it, is $39. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial, so you cannot build and publish for nothing the way you can on Wix or WordPress.com. And there are fewer third-party apps than Wix, so an unusual integration may not exist.
Is Squarespace worth the price?
From $16/mo on Basic, or $23/mo on Core, billed yearly with a free domain for the first year. Core carries the 2% transaction fee; Plus removes it at $39. If you sell little, the fee is small; if you sell a lot, the fee is the reason to look at Plus or at a store-first platform.
Who should buy Squarespace?
Small businesses, creatives and bloggers. If you want a site that looks designed, built quickly, and fast on a phone, and your shop is modest, this is the safe recommendation. If your store is the business, go to Shopify.
