What separates the easiest website builders for beginners?

Squarespace scores 8.8 and costs $23 a month. In our test it produced the fastest build at 94 minutes and the best mobile PageSpeed of the hosted builders. The trade-offs: a 2% transaction fee on Core, Plus at $39, and no free plan.

Wix scores 8.4 at $29. It gives you 900 templates, 300+ apps and an AI site generator that built a first draft in minutes, plus a free plan to learn on. Free-form editing made our mobile layout fragile, and it had the slowest mobile PageSpeed of the paid builders.

Hostinger Website Builder scores 8.2 at $2.99. Its AI generator turned three sentences into a credible draft with copy and images, and pages were fast on Hostinger's hosting. You get fewer templates and apps than Wix or Squarespace, and the best price needs 48 months up front.

GoDaddy Website Builder scores 7.6 at $9.99. It was the simplest editor in the test — our site was live in 79 minutes — with 24/7 phone support and bundled email, social posting and appointments. Design control is the least here, and blog and store tools are basic.

Weebly scores 7.0 at $10. You can sell on every plan, including free, with Square, and the editor takes minutes to learn. Templates and features have barely changed in years, and design options are the weakest in the test.

What should I check before buying a beginner website builder?

Our scoring weights design and templates at 25, ease of use at 25, features and ecommerce at 20, performance and SEO at 15, and value at 15. Match those to your own priorities.

  • Build time and mobile: GoDaddy had our site live in 79 minutes; Squarespace took 94. Wix's free-form editor left our mobile layout needing fixes.
  • Cost beyond the sticker: Squarespace charges a 2% transaction fee on Core, and Hostinger's best price needs 48 months up front.
  • Room to grow: Wix offers 900 templates and 300+ apps; Hostinger has fewer templates and apps. GoDaddy's blog and store are basic.
  • Selling: Weebly lets you sell on every plan, including free, with Square.

Which one for whom?

Squarespace suits beginners who want templates a designer would not be embarrassed by and guardrails that stop them breaking them. Wix suits anyone who wants to put anything anywhere and start on a free plan. Hostinger Website Builder suits buyers who want an AI first draft and hosting bundled for under $3 a month on the long term. GoDaddy Website Builder suits people who want a plain, tidy site fast, with phone support and marketing tools included. Weebly suits beginners who want to sell with Square on a cheap plan.

Squarespace fits beginners who care most about how the finished site looks, while Wix fits those who want the most freedom and a free plan to start on. Hostinger Website Builder suits anyone who wants an AI first draft and hosting bundled cheaply, and GoDaddy Website Builder suits those who want a plain site live fast with phone support. Weebly is the pick if you want to sell with Square on a $10 plan.

Questions about easiest website builders for beginners

Website builder or WordPress?
A builder (Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger) hosts, secures and updates the site for you and is finished in an afternoon. WordPress (WordPress.com here, or self-hosted on a host from our hosting ranking) is more flexible and cheaper at scale but you maintain it. For a brochure site, a builder; for a content site you will grow for years, WordPress.
Can I move my site later?
Mostly no. Wix, Squarespace, Shopify and Hostinger do not export a working site; you export content and rebuild. WordPress.com and Webflow export code or content you can host elsewhere. Register your domain with a separate registrar so at least the address moves with you.
Which is best for an online store?
Shopify, by a distance, if the store is the business: payments, shipping, taxes and apps are built for it. Squarespace and Wix handle a small catalogue well inside a broader site. Watch transaction fees — Wix and Squarespace charge on lower plans; Shopify charges if you do not use Shopify Payments.
How do you test website builders?
One person builds the same five-page site — home, about, services, blog with two posts, contact form, and a three-product shop — on each builder from a blank account, timed. We then run Google PageSpeed on the finished mobile site, test the form and a checkout, and price the plan that allowed all of it over three years with a domain.
