What separates the best video editing software for YouTube on this page?

Six editors, and the gap between them is mostly about how you work, not how good they are. DaVinci Resolve scores 8.7 and costs nothing, with Studio at $295 once. Final Cut Pro scores 8.5 at $299.99 and exported 4K in 3.9 minutes on the M4 Pro. Wondershare Filmora scores 8 at $49.99, or $79.99 for a perpetual licence. Adobe Premiere Pro scores 7.9 at $22.99 a month. CapCut scores 7.5 and is free, with Pro at $9.99/mo. InVideo AI scores 6.5 at $28.

Two of these are not really editors. InVideo AI turns a text prompt into a finished 3-minute narrated video in under 10 minutes, but it cannot do a timeline project. CapCut is a timeline editor, just a thin one: no multicam, weak audio tools.

What should you check before buying?

The scoring puts editing tools at 30, performance and ease of learning at 20 each, value at 20 and AI and output at 10. Weigh those against your own footage.

  • Hardware. Resolve is demanding; the Windows desktop struggled without the GPU. Final Cut is Mac only.
  • Learning time. Our beginner took 4 hours to a finished video in Resolve, 48 minutes to a two-minute video in Filmora.
  • Long-term cost. Premiere Pro runs $827 over three years with no way to own it. Filmora and Final Cut are one payment.
  • Project type. Multicam and colour work rule out Filmora and CapCut. Handing files to Premiere users is harder from Final Cut's magnetic timeline.
  • AI credits. Filmora's AI features consume paid credits; InVideo caps generated minutes and stock per plan.

DaVinci Resolve

For colour work and anyone who wants the deepest toolset without paying. Free version has no watermark and includes editing, Fusion, Fairlight and the Color page.

Final Cut Pro

For Mac editors working alone who want speed and one payment. Updates have been free since 2011.

Wondershare Filmora

For beginners who want a finished video today. Drag-and-drop templates, AI silence removal, captions and background removal.

Adobe Premiere Pro

For teams and anyone cutting from a transcript. Text-based editing, auto captions, Dynamic Link to After Effects and Frame.io review.

CapCut

For phone-first creators making Shorts and Reels. Free with no watermark on desktop, and the same project moves between phone and desktop.

InVideo AI

For explainers from a script, not for cutting your own footage.

DaVinci Resolve suits colour work and anyone who wants a full editor for free, while Final Cut Pro is the pick for Mac editors working alone. Wondershare Filmora fits beginners who want a finished video fast, and Adobe Premiere Pro fits teams cutting from a transcript. CapCut covers phone-first Shorts and Reels, and InVideo AI is for turning a brief into a narrated explainer.

Questions about best video editing software for youtube

Is DaVinci Resolve really free?
Yes. The free version edits, grades and mixes audio without watermarks or time limits. The $295 Studio licence adds noise reduction, some AI tools, 10-bit and higher-resolution export beyond 4K, and GPU acceleration for effects. Most YouTubers never need Studio.
Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro?
On a Mac, Final Cut exported our project fastest and costs $299.99 once; Premiere costs $22.99 a month but runs on Windows too, integrates with After Effects and Photoshop, and is what most editing jobs ask for. If you work alone on a Mac, Final Cut; if you collaborate or use Adobe tools, Premiere.
Which editor is easiest for a beginner?
Filmora and CapCut — our beginner finished a two-minute video in under an hour in both. Filmora has the deeper toolset; CapCut is free and built for vertical video.
How do you test video editors?
Same 4K project (six layers, colour grade, multicam segment, captions, mixed audio) rebuilt in each editor on the same two machines. We time playback and export, log missing features, run a beginner through a set task, and price each over three years.
