Frequently asked questions about stem kits for kids

What age are STEM kits actually good for?
Later than the box says, in our experience. A kit labelled 8+ was comfortable for our 11-year-old and needed a parent beside the 7-year-old for most steps. Pick the lower end of the age range only if an adult will do it alongside.
Subscription box or a one-off kit?
Subscriptions (KiwiCo, MEL Science) keep a curious child supplied with a new project every month and were the kits our testers returned to most. A one-off kit (Snap Circuits, a chemistry set) is cheaper and better as a gift. Both are in the ranking on the same rubric.
Are chemistry sets safe?
Modern sets use small quantities of low-hazard chemicals and require goggles; the Thames & Kosmos and MEL kits in our test are compliant with US toy-safety standards and ship with safety instructions. Supervise anything involving heat or acids, and store the box out of reach.
How do you test STEM kits?
A 7-year-old and an 11-year-old use each kit over two weeks with a parent logging setup time, help needed, session length and whether the child returned unprompted. Afterwards we ask the child to explain what happened. Price is divided by logged hours to get a cost per hour.
