Frequently asked questions about home security cameras
Do I have to pay a subscription?
For Ring, Nest, Blink and Arlo, yes for anything beyond a live view — recorded clips, person and package detection and history need a plan ($4–$10 a month per camera or home). Eufy, Reolink, Wyze (with a microSD card) and TP-Link Tapo record locally and detect people without a plan. Our three-year cost includes whichever plan the headline features need.
Battery or wired?
Battery cameras go anywhere and lasted one to four months at our event rate (about 15 clips a day); solar panels made the Eufy and Reolink effectively perpetual. Wired cameras (Tapo, Wyze on its cable) record continuously and never need charging, which for a front door with heavy footfall is worth the drilling.
Are these cameras private?
Every camera here encrypts video in transit; local-storage cameras keep footage in your home. Ring and Nest have policies on sharing with police (Ring ended its Request for Assistance tool in 2024); Wyze had a 2024 incident where some users briefly saw others' thumbnails, and Eufy was found in 2022 to send thumbnails to the cloud despite "local-only" claims — both since fixed and disclosed. Turn on two-factor login on every brand.
How do you test security cameras?
Each camera spends a week at the front door and a week at the back garden. We stage a person walking up at noon, dusk and 11 pm, a parcel drop, a cat crossing and a car passing, three times each, and record whether the camera detected and labelled it and how many seconds until the phone buzzed. We count false alerts, measure battery drain at that event rate, and price the camera plus 36 months of the plan needed for person detection and clip history.
*Scores: Video & night quality 25 · Detection & alerts 20 · Storage & subscription 20 · Install & power 15 · Value 20; score = Σ ÷ 10, ties break on the earlier test date.
