What separates the best outdoor security cameras on this page?

The scores run from 8.8 down to 7.2, and the split is mostly about storage and detection. The eufy SoloCam S340 at 8.8 costs $199.99 and records to 8 GB of local storage with person and vehicle detection and no plan. The Reolink Argus 4 Pro at 8.4 costs $149.99 and stitches two lenses into a 180° 4K view, with person, vehicle and animal detection free on the camera.

At the other end, the Ring Outdoor Cam Plus and Arlo Pro 5S 2K both score 7.2. Ring records nothing without a plan; Arlo Secure is required for clips and detection. The TP-Link Tapo C120 at 8.3 costs $39.99 and the Wyze Cam v4 at 8.2 costs $35.98 — both wired, both record continuously to microSD.

What should I check before buying an outdoor security camera?

Scoring put video and night quality at 25 points, detection and alerts at 20, storage and subscription at 20, install and power at 15, and value at 20. Work through those in order.

  • Power: the eufy SoloCam S340 needs a few hours of sun a day and struggles on north-facing walls. The Reolink Argus 4 Pro runs two months on battery without its solar panel. The Tapo C120 and Wyze Cam v4 need a cable.
  • Storage: the Tapo C120 records continuously to 512 GB. The Blink Outdoor 4 writes clips to a USB stick on the Sync Module. Ring and Arlo store nothing locally.
  • Detection: the Google Nest Cam (battery) labelled every staged event correctly with zero false alerts in two weeks. Blink and Ring need a plan for person detection.
  • Night video: the Reolink Argus 4 Pro and Ring Outdoor Cam Plus both give colour at night without a spotlight.

No subscription

The Reolink Argus 4 Pro suits a garden corner where one 180° view covers everything.

Budget and wired power

The TP-Link Tapo C120 suits a covered outlet and a $39.99 budget. The Wyze Cam v4 suits $35.98 with a covered outlet for its power cable.

Detection and app

The Google Nest Cam (battery) suits a front door where accurate labels matter; full history needs Nest Aware at $8 a month. The Blink Outdoor 4 suits a low-maintenance spot where two AA batteries lasted the whole test. The Ring Outdoor Cam Plus suits anyone already in Ring's ecosystem. The Arlo Pro 5S 2K suits a buyer who wants the sharpest daytime and night video of the battery cameras and will pay for Arlo Secure.

For a sunny wall with no subscription, the eufy SoloCam S340 is the pick; for one wide 180° view of a garden, the Reolink Argus 4 Pro. If you have a covered outlet and a small budget, the TP-Link Tapo C120 or Wyze Cam v4 do the job on a cable. The Google Nest Cam (battery) suits a front door where detection accuracy matters most.

Questions about best outdoor security cameras

Do I have to pay a subscription?
For Ring, Nest, Blink and Arlo, yes for anything beyond a live view — recorded clips, person and package detection and history need a plan ($4–$10 a month per camera or home). Eufy, Reolink, Wyze (with a microSD card) and TP-Link Tapo record locally and detect people without a plan. Our three-year cost includes whichever plan the headline features need.
Battery or wired?
Battery cameras go anywhere and lasted one to four months at our event rate (about 15 clips a day); solar panels made the Eufy and Reolink effectively perpetual. Wired cameras (Tapo, Wyze on its cable) record continuously and never need charging, which for a front door with heavy footfall is worth the drilling.
Are these cameras private?
Every camera here encrypts video in transit; local-storage cameras keep footage in your home. Ring and Nest have policies on sharing with police (Ring ended its Request for Assistance tool in 2024); Wyze had a 2024 incident where some users briefly saw others' thumbnails, and Eufy was found in 2022 to send thumbnails to the cloud despite "local-only" claims — both since fixed and disclosed. Turn on two-factor login on every brand.
How do you test security cameras?
Each camera spends a week at the front door and a week at the back garden. We stage a person walking up at noon, dusk and 11 pm, a parcel drop, a cat crossing and a car passing, three times each, and record whether the camera detected and labelled it and how many seconds until the phone buzzed. We count false alerts, measure battery drain at that event rate, and price the camera plus 36 months of the plan needed for person detection and clip history.
