ON1 Photo RAW (Photo RAW 2025, one-time) review 2027
Browser, RAW developer, layers, AI masking, noise reduction and effects in one app you can buy once — the closest single-purchase Lightroom replacement
Is the ON1 Photo RAW Worth It?
Best Lightroom alternative. ON1 is the one purchase that replaces both halves of the Adobe plan for most photographers, and its AI masking and noise reduction were genuinely close to Adobe's. It is slower and busier than Lightroom, which cost it on organisation and ease.
ON1 Photo RAW Pros & Cons
- Develops, layers and retouches in one app — no Photoshop needed for most work
- NoNoise AI matched Lightroom Denoise on our high-ISO Sony files
- Works as a Lightroom or Photoshop plugin too
- One-time licence
- Slower browsing and export than Lightroom on the same machine
- Interface is busy
- Major versions are paid upgrades
What problem does ON1 Photo RAW solve for photographers?
ON1 Photo RAW is the closest single-purchase replacement for the Adobe plan. It develops, layers and retouches in one app, so most work needs no Photoshop, and it also runs as a Lightroom or Photoshop plugin if you keep either. The one-time licence is the point: you buy it once rather than renting it. Its AI masking and noise reduction were genuinely close to Adobe's in our tests, and NoNoise AI matched Lightroom Denoise on our high-ISO Sony files.

How did it score 8.4?
Five criteria, each scored against its own maximum.
- RAW processing — 21/25. Demosaicing quality, noise reduction, lens corrections and camera support across our three-brand test set.
- Editing tools — 21/25. Masking, layers, retouching, AI selections and generative tools, and how far a portrait and a landscape could be taken.
- Organisation — 12/15. Cataloguing, culling speed, keywords, face and subject search, cloud sync.
- Ease of use — 12/15. Time for a beginner to finish an edit; presets and guided tools.
- Value — 18/20. Price over three years; one-time licence or subscription.
Speed and interface are where it lost ground, and that is what held organisation and ease below the RAW and editing scores.
What does ON1 Photo RAW do well?
The workflow is the strength. Develop, layers and retouching live in one app, so a beach edit that would otherwise cross into Photoshop can be finished in ON1 alone.

Noise reduction is the other measured win: NoNoise AI matched Lightroom Denoise on our high-ISO Sony files. On our 200 RAW export test the app took 6.3 min. It also works as a Lightroom or Photoshop plugin, so it can sit alongside an existing catalogue rather than replace it outright.
How does the AI technology work?
Super Select AI builds a mask by identifying a subject in the frame, so you can adjust that subject without brushing it by hand. NoNoise AI reduces noise in high-ISO files. Sky Swap replaces a sky, Portrait AI targets faces, and generative erase removes objects. Resize AI enlarges an outlined area of an image.

What is in the box and what does it run on?
ON1 Photo RAW is a Windows and Mac download with a 14-day trial. RAW support is broad, layers are included, and the AI set covers NoNoise AI, Super Select AI masking, Sky Swap, Portrait AI and generative erase. Cataloguing is browse by folders plus an optional catalogue. The licence is one-time at $99.99, or $7.99/mo for ON1 Everything.

How does it compare with the alternatives?
Adobe Lightroom Classic scores 8.6 and costs $9.99/mo with Photoshop. It has the widest RAW support, updated monthly, and a best-in-class catalogue, but no layers of its own and no one-time licence. ON1 is ahead on the single purchase and on layers in the same app; behind on catalogue and camera support.
Affinity Photo 2 scores 8.2 at $69.99 one-time. It is a full layer-based editor with subject selection but no generative tools and no catalogue, so ON1 covers the develop-and-organise side that Affinity does not.
DxO PhotoLab scores 7.7 at $229 one-time. Its DeepPRIME XD2 denoise and DxO optics modules are its case, but it has no layers and only a basic PhotoLibrary.

Where does ON1 Photo RAW fall short?
Speed and interface. Browsing and export are slower than Lightroom on the same machine, and the interface is busy. Major versions are paid upgrades, so the one-time licence is per version rather than forever.
Is ON1 Photo RAW good value?
It is $99.99. Over three years that is $99.99, against subscriptions that continue for as long as you use them.
Who should buy ON1 Photo RAW?
Photographers leaving Adobe. It is the one purchase that replaces both halves of the Adobe plan for most photographers, with the caveat that it is slower and busier than Lightroom.
