Frequently asked questions about pet insurance
Are pre-existing conditions ever covered?
No insurer covers a condition your pet showed signs of before the policy started or during the waiting period. The difference is in the definition: Embrace, Pets Best and ASPCA will cover a curable condition again if it stays symptom-free and treatment-free for twelve months. Healthy Paws and Trupanion treat most as permanent exclusions. This is the single biggest reason to insure a pet while it is young and healthy.
What are waiting periods?
The gap between buying and being covered. Typically two to fifteen days for accidents and fourteen to thirty days for illness. Orthopaedic conditions are the catch: Healthy Paws imposes twelve months for hip dysplasia, Embrace six months (waivable with an exam), Lemonade thirty days in most states. If your dog is a breed prone to cruciate or hip problems, read this clause first.
How does reimbursement work?
You pay the vet, submit the invoice, and the insurer pays you back the agreed percentage after your deductible. Trupanion is the exception here: its software can pay the clinic directly at checkout where the practice supports it, which matters if a $6,000 surgery would not fit on your card.
Is pet insurance worth it?
It is a bet you hope to lose. A routine year costs you the premium for nothing; one cruciate repair runs $3,500 to $7,000 and one night of emergency care $1,500 to $3,000. If you could not absorb that without debt, insurance moves the risk for $30 to $70 a month. If you could, a dedicated savings account does the same job with no exclusions.
How do you test pet insurance?
We quote the same four pets from the same ZIP codes at identical settings, then read each policy document end to end: covered conditions, exclusions, caps, waiting periods, age limits, the pre-existing definition and the renewal terms. We check complaint data in state insurance department filings and record published claim-processing times and whether direct vet payment is available.
