Frequently asked questions about personal trainer certifications

Which certification do gyms actually accept?
Most large US gyms require an NCCA-accredited certification, and NASM, ACE, ISSA, NSCA and ACSM all qualify. NASM and ACE are the two named most often in job postings we sampled. If a programme is not NCCA-accredited, check with the specific employer before you buy — some accept it, many do not.
How much does it really cost?
The headline price is rarely the total. Budget $600 to $900 for a self-study package with the exam included, and remember recertification: most bodies want continuing-education credits and a fee every two years, which runs $99 to $199 plus the cost of the courses.
Do I need a degree first?
No. Every certification here needs only a high-school diploma, CPR/AED certification and to be 18 or older. The NSCA CSCS is the exception: it requires a bachelor's degree or current enrolment as a senior, which is why it sits in a different part of the market.
How do you test certifications?
We buy the standard self-study package for each, work through the textbook and course, take the practice exams, and sit or schedule the proctored exam. We verify accreditation against the NCCA register, sample US gym job postings for which certifications are named, price the full path to certified including the exam, and read the recertification terms.
