What separates the picks on this page?

Four certifications, four different trade-offs. NASM Certified Personal Trainer scores 8.9 at $899, and the reason is employer pull: it was named in more of the gym job postings we sampled than any other. The OPT model gives a beginner a system to program from, and the learning platform — video, practice exams, a guided study plan — is the most polished here. The catch is price, and the exam alone is $599.

ACE Certified Personal Trainer scores 8.8 at $675. Its behaviour-change material is the best here for clients who do not turn up, and as a nonprofit it carries weight with health systems and hospitals. Programming is less prescriptive than NASM's OPT model, and a retake on the Basic package is $249.

ISSA Certified Personal Trainer scores 8.4 at $799. The exam is open-book, untimed and online, with a free retake — the least stressful path here. You also get a free trainer website and a business-building course, and payment plans run from about $70 a month. Some employers rate the open-book exam below NASM and ACE, and the study material is lighter on exercise science.

NFPT Certified Personal Trainer scores 7.8 at $399. It is NCCA-accredited, half the price of NASM, and recertification is $85 a year with CECs bundled. It barely appeared in the job postings we sampled, and the course is text-heavy with little video.

What should you check before buying?
