Frequently asked questions about online therapy
Is online therapy as effective as in person?
For anxiety and depression, studies of video-based cognitive behavioural therapy find outcomes comparable to in-person care. Text-only therapy has weaker evidence. Severe conditions, crises and some diagnoses need in-person or specialist care — every platform here screens for that at intake.
Does insurance cover it?
Talkspace, Brightside, Talkiatry and Amwell bill many major insurers; BetterHelp does not accept insurance but offers financial aid; Open Path is a sliding-scale nonprofit. Check your plan's telehealth benefit before signing up — the cash prices here range from $30 to $100 a session.
What happened with BetterHelp and the FTC?
In 2023 the FTC ordered BetterHelp to pay $7.8 million for sharing users' email addresses, IP addresses and health questionnaire answers with Facebook, Snapchat and others for advertising between 2017 and 2020. BetterHelp says the practice ended; our privacy score reflects the record.
How do you test therapy platforms?
Three team members each sign up, complete intake, attend four sessions (video where offered) and request one therapist switch. We verify every therapist's licence with the state board, time the first available session, record cash and insurance pricing, and read privacy policies and enforcement records.
