What separates the top picks on this page?

Three services, three different jobs. Talkspace scores 8.3 and costs $69. Open Path Collective scores 7.6 at $40. BetterHelp scores 7.2 at $70.

Talkspace wins on coverage. Testers with large insurers or employer plans paid $0–$25 copays, and therapy, psychiatry and teen therapy sit under one account. The trade-off: video sessions run 30 or 45 minutes, not 50, and the cash price is high if you only want messaging.

Open Path is the cheapest real therapy here. Licensed therapists agree to $40–$80 a session, you get full 50-minute sessions, and in-person options exist. You pick the therapist from profiles. The catch is an income cap, and you handle contacting and scheduling yourself — no app.

BetterHelp has the largest pool and matched all three testers within 24 hours. Unlimited messaging plus one live session a week. No insurance, though: $280–$400 a month cash, and a 2023 FTC order over sharing health data for ads sits on the record.

What should you check before buying?

Run your own priorities against the scoring criteria: therapist quality and matching (30), access and flexibility (20), insurance and cost (25), privacy (15), tools (10).

  • Insurance first. If your plan is accepted, Talkspace's $0–$25 copays beat every cash price here. If it isn't, Open Path's $40 sessions are the low end.
  • Session length. Open Path gives 50 minutes. Talkspace gives 30 or 45.
  • Privacy. BetterHelp's FTC order is a real factor if you're weighing where your data goes.
  • Admin. Open Path means you contact and schedule therapists yourself. Talkspace and BetterHelp handle matching for you.
  • Budget shape. BetterHelp's $280–$400 monthly cash cost suits people who want unlimited messaging; Open Path suits per-session payers.

Questions about best online couples therapy

Is online therapy as effective as in person?
For anxiety and depression, studies of video-based cognitive behavioural therapy find outcomes comparable to in-person care. Text-only therapy has weaker evidence. Severe conditions, crises and some diagnoses need in-person or specialist care — every platform here screens for that at intake.
Does insurance cover it?
Talkspace, Brightside, Talkiatry and Amwell bill many major insurers; BetterHelp does not accept insurance but offers financial aid; Open Path is a sliding-scale nonprofit. Check your plan's telehealth benefit before signing up — the cash prices here range from $30 to $100 a session.
What happened with BetterHelp and the FTC?
In 2023 the FTC ordered BetterHelp to pay $7.8 million for sharing users' email addresses, IP addresses and health questionnaire answers with Facebook, Snapchat and others for advertising between 2017 and 2020. BetterHelp says the practice ended; our privacy score reflects the record.
How do you test therapy platforms?
Three team members each sign up, complete intake, attend four sessions (video where offered) and request one therapist switch. We verify every therapist's licence with the state board, time the first available session, record cash and insurance pricing, and read privacy policies and enforcement records.
