ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 (GU605, Core Ultra 9, 32GB, RTX 4090) review 2027
Best gaming laptop that still looks like a work machine: RTX 4090, 240Hz OLED, 41 dB under load
Is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 Worth It?
Best gaming laptop. The gaming laptop we would carry to a meeting: RTX 4090 performance in a 1.85 kg aluminium chassis that stays at 41 dB under load. Battery is the trade-off.

What problem does the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 solve?
The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 is the gaming laptop we would carry to a meeting. That is the whole point of the machine: RTX 4090 performance in a 1.85 kg aluminium chassis that stays at 41 dB under load, so it works in a conference room as well as it works in a game. The tagline calls it the best gaming laptop that still looks like a work machine, and the test results back that up — 140 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1600p with DLSS on, and the quietest gaming laptop we measured at 41 dB. The trade-off is battery life, and the price is $3,299.
How did it score in our tests?
We scored the Zephyrus G16 across five criteria, and it finished fourth of 14 laptops tested in the category.
- Performance — 28/30. Measured with the same 12-minute 4K export in Final Cut, Premiere and Resolve, run twice back-to-back, plus sustained clocks over 20 minutes.
- Display — 19/20. Measured on a colorimeter for DCI-P3 coverage, ΔE, sustained brightness and uniformity.
- Battery — 14/20. A video rundown at 200 nits and a mixed office-load loop.
- Build — 14/15. Keyboard, hinge, ports, fan noise at 1 m and repairability.
- Value — 15/15. Price per rubric point against the category median on the day of the test.
Battery is the one criterion where the machine gives ground, and it is the reason the overall score lands at 9 rather than higher.
What are the standout strengths?
The measured results are the story. In Cyberpunk 2077 at 1600p with DLSS on, the G16 hit 140 fps. At 1 m, fan noise measured 41 dB — the quietest gaming laptop we measured. Those two numbers together are unusual: most machines in this class either run loud or throttle to stay civil.
Weight matters just as much. At 1.85 kg, the G16 is 700 g lighter than the Legion Pro 7i, which is the kind of difference you notice every time you pick the bag up. The 16" 2.5K OLED at 240Hz is superb for both games and video, so the display does not force a compromise between work and play either.
How do OLED and DLSS work?
OLED pixels emit their own light, so each one can switch off completely for true black, and the panel can change state far faster than a backlit LCD — which is why a 240Hz OLED looks so clean in motion. DLSS renders the frame at a lower internal resolution and uses a trained model to reconstruct it at the display resolution, so the GPU does less work per frame and frame rates rise. The G16 pairs both: a 240Hz OLED panel and an RTX 4090, the GPU that supports DLSS.
What parts and build does it use?
The chassis is aluminium, and the components are current-generation across the board.
- Processor: Intel Core Ultra 9 185H
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 16GB
- Memory: 32 GB
- Storage: 1024 GB SSD
- Weight: 1.85 kg
- Operating system: Windows 11
- Form factor: Clamshell
- Warranty: 1 year
The port selection covers the practical cases: Thunderbolt 4 and USB-C for docks and fast storage, two USB-A for older peripherals, HDMI 2.1 for an external display and a full-size SD slot for camera cards.
How does it compare with its rivals?
Against the Apple MacBook Pro 16" (9.7, $3,499), the G16 is the gaming machine and the Mac is the video machine. It weighs 2.14 kg. The G16 counters with the RTX 4090, a 240Hz OLED and 1.85 kg, and it costs less at $3,299 against $3,499.
It is far lighter and far cheaper, but it has no discrete GPU, so it cannot approach 140 fps.
It is lighter and much cheaper, but it is not built for the frame rates the G16 delivers.

Where does it fall short?
Three concrete weaknesses. The price is $3,299. Battery life is 5h 20m in office use, which is the number that keeps the Battery score at 14/20. And the RAM is soldered, so the 32 GB you buy is the 32 GB you keep for the life of the machine.
Is it worth $3,299?
The price is $3,299, and the Value score is 15/15 — full marks against the category median on the day of the test. That is the clearest signal in the scorecard: measured against what else is on the shelf, the G16's price per rubric point is the strongest in the category.
Who should buy the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16?
Buy it if you want gaming power in a light, quiet, meeting-friendly chassis. The 140 fps result, the 41 dB noise figure, the 1.85 kg weight and the 240Hz OLED are the four reasons it earns that recommendation. If your priority is battery life or the lowest possible price, the rivals above serve those needs better — but none of them combine an RTX 4090 with this weight and this noise level.
