Best Laptops With Long Battery Life

What separates the best laptops with long battery life?

Battery is only one column on the scorecard. Performance counts 30, display 20, battery 20, build 15 and value 15, so a machine can win on runtime and still lose the ranking. Here the three picks split cleanly.

• Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 — 9.1, $1,749. 1.09 kg, a 14h office-loop battery, MIL-STD-810H chassis and a 3-year on-site warranty. Integrated graphics, so 4K editing is out, and the speakers are thin.
• Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 — 9.0, $1,499. 15h 10m in office use, silent under office load, with an excellent keyboard and haptic trackpad. Some x86 apps still run emulated and there is no discrete GPU option.
• Apple MacBook Air 13" — 8.8, $999. 18h 05m, fanless, 1.24 kg, fast enough for 1080p editing and all office work, with education pricing from $899. The 256GB base storage fills fast and the display is 60Hz.

The ThinkPad is the lightest and the only one with on-site cover. The Surface runs longest on Windows. The Air runs longest overall and costs the least.

What should I check before buying a long-battery laptop?

Look at how the runtime was measured. Office-loop figures are what you will see on email, documents and browser tabs; a 4K export will cut any of these short.

Then match the machine to the software. The Surface Laptop 7 runs some x86 apps emulated, so check your line-of-business tools first. The ThinkPad's integrated graphics rule out 4K editing. The Air handles 1080p editing and office work, but 256GB fills quickly once you add footage.

Weigh the extras against the price. The ThinkPad carries a 3-year on-site warranty and a MIL-STD-810H chassis at $1,749. The Air starts at $999, with education pricing from $899. The Surface sits at $1,499.

Finally, check the display and ports on the model you actually order. The Air's 60Hz panel is the one spec that dates it, and the ThinkPad's thin speakers are the trade for its 1.09 kg frame.
