What separates the best tablet for kids school on this page?

Four tablets, four different answers to the same question. The Amazon Fire Max 11 Kids Pro scores 8.6 at $229.99 — the highest here — on the strength of an 11-inch 2K screen, a 14-hour battery and an aluminium body that survived all our drops. The catch: Fire OS limits school apps, and $230 gets close to iPad territory without Google Play.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ Kids Edition and the Apple iPad (A16) both score 8.3, but they get there differently. The Samsung runs $219.99 with Google Play, an 11-inch 1080p screen, 64 GB and Samsung Kids mode plus Google Family Link. It survived 9 of 10 drops — one corner crack in the case — and carries a one-year warranty with no replacement guarantee. The iPad costs $349, has the fastest and sharpest screen here, and its Screen Time, Ask to Buy and Communication Safety controls held in our test. It survived 10 drops only in a third-party foam case, and no case is included.

The Lenovo Tab M9 is the budget entry at $139.99: Google Play and Kids Space, 64 GB, a 12-hour battery and a folio case in the box. It cracked its screen on drop seven in that folio, and it is slow with a dim screen outdoors.

What should I check before buying a school tablet?

Our scoring puts parental controls at 30 points, durability and case at 20, screen and performance at 20, content and apps at 15, and value at 15. That order matches what actually goes wrong.

  • App access: Google Play or the App Store matters if your school names specific apps. Fire OS limits school apps.
  • Drop protection: the Fire Max 11 Kids Pro survived all drops in its case; the Samsung cracked a corner on one of ten; the iPad needed a third-party foam case; the Lenovo cracked on drop seven.
  • Warranty: the Fire Max 11 Kids Pro includes a two-year guarantee. The Samsung has one year and no replacement guarantee. The iPad has no included guarantee against drops.
  • Controls: Samsung Kids mode plus Google Family Link held in our test, as did Screen Time, Ask to Buy and Communication Safety.

Which one for whom?

For a younger child who drops things, the Fire Max 11 Kids Pro is the pick: longest battery here, aluminium body, two-year guarantee. If your school requires Google Play apps, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ Kids Edition is the middle path. If the tablet needs to last into secondary school, the iPad (A16) holds value and runs every school app. On a tight budget, the Lenovo Tab M9 gives Google Play and Kids Space for $139.99 — just add better protection than the folio.

For a younger child, the Amazon Fire Max 11 Kids Pro pairs the longest battery here with a two-year guarantee. If school apps need Google Play, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ Kids Edition is the middle path. For a tablet that lasts into secondary school, the Apple iPad (A16) runs every school app and holds value; on a tight budget, the Lenovo Tab M9 covers the basics for $139.99.

Questions about best tablets for school and homework

Fire Kids tablet or iPad?
For ages 3–8, an Amazon Fire Kids tablet: it comes in a bumper case with a two-year no-questions warranty, a year of Amazon Kids+ content, and controls a 9-year-old could not defeat in our test — for $110–$200. For ages 8 and up who need school apps, a real browser and a device that lasts, the iPad with Screen Time is the better long-term buy at $349 plus a case.
What is Amazon Kids+ and do I need to keep paying?
Kids+ is Amazon's subscription library of children's books, videos, apps and games, included for a year with Kids tablets and then $5.99 a month (or $79 a year for a family). The tablet works without it — you can add apps yourself — but most of the "included content" families expect is Kids+.
How do I stop my child getting round the controls?
Amazon Kids profiles and Apple Screen Time both held against our 9-year-old's attempts (guessing the PIN, changing the clock, factory reset) as long as the parent PIN is not the phone unlock code. Samsung Kids and Google Family Link held too; Family Link's weakness is that it depends on the parent's phone being reachable.
How do you test kids' tablets?
A parent sets up each tablet with a 5-year-old and a 9-year-old profile. The children use them for two weeks; the 9-year-old is asked to try to get around every limit. We then drop each tablet ten times from one metre onto a wooden floor in its case, run the same video loop at 50% brightness until it dies, and price the tablet with a case and a year of subscription.
