What separates the most durable kids tablet picks?

All four tablets here come with a case and a two-year worry-free guarantee, so the split is screen, speed and price. The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids scores 8.8 at $199.99: its 10-inch 1080p screen survived all ten drops with no marks, and it ran 13 hours on our video loop. The Amazon Fire Max 11 Kids Pro scores 8.6 at $229.99, with an 11-inch 2K screen, aluminium body and the longest battery here at 14 hours. The Amazon Fire 7 Kids scores 8.2 at $109.99: $110 with case, guarantee and a year of Kids+, light enough for a 3-year-old to carry, but slow to open apps and 16 GB fills quickly.

What should I check before buying a kids' tablet?

Parental controls carry the most weight in our scoring (30 points), then durability and case (20), screen and performance (20), content and apps (15) and value (15). Every tablet here uses the same Amazon Kids controls, and our 9-year-old failed to get round them on the HD 10. The differences sit elsewhere.

  • App store: Fire OS has no Google Play, so app selection is Amazon's, and school apps are limited on the Max 11.
  • Subscription: Kids+ costs $5.99 a month after year one.
  • Screen: the Fire 7's 7-inch low-resolution panel and the HD 8's 720p are the weak points; the HD 10 and Max 11 are the sharp ones.
  • Storage and speed: the Fire 7's 16 GB fills quickly and it is slow to open apps.

Questions about most durable kids' tablets

Fire Kids tablet or iPad?
For ages 3–8, an Amazon Fire Kids tablet: it comes in a bumper case with a two-year no-questions warranty, a year of Amazon Kids+ content, and controls a 9-year-old could not defeat in our test — for $110–$200. For ages 8 and up who need school apps, a real browser and a device that lasts, the iPad with Screen Time is the better long-term buy at $349 plus a case.
What is Amazon Kids+ and do I need to keep paying?
Kids+ is Amazon's subscription library of children's books, videos, apps and games, included for a year with Kids tablets and then $5.99 a month (or $79 a year for a family). The tablet works without it — you can add apps yourself — but most of the "included content" families expect is Kids+.
How do I stop my child getting round the controls?
Amazon Kids profiles and Apple Screen Time both held against our 9-year-old's attempts (guessing the PIN, changing the clock, factory reset) as long as the parent PIN is not the phone unlock code. Samsung Kids and Google Family Link held too; Family Link's weakness is that it depends on the parent's phone being reachable.
How do you test kids' tablets?
A parent sets up each tablet with a 5-year-old and a 9-year-old profile. The children use them for two weeks; the 9-year-old is asked to try to get around every limit. We then drop each tablet ten times from one metre onto a wooden floor in its case, run the same video loop at 50% brightness until it dies, and price the tablet with a case and a year of subscription.
