Protection, controls, apps, longevity and real cost over three years, from our two-week tests with a 5- and a 9-year-old.

Protection and guarantee

Fire Kids: bumper case in the box, two-year replacement for any damage. iPad: buy a case; AppleCare+ is $69 for two years and still has a $49 screen fee.

Controls

Both held against our 9-year-old. Amazon Kids is simpler and stricter by default; Screen Time is more granular and covers the whole Apple family.

Apps

Fire OS has Amazon's store — good kids' content, weak on school and creative apps, no Google. iPad has everything.

Longevity

A Fire is outgrown in two to three years. An iPad from age 8 lasts to secondary school.

Three-year cost

Fire HD 10 Kids: $200 + two years of Kids+ at $5.99 = about $344. iPad: $349 + case $40 + AppleCare+ $69 = about $458.

Rule

Under 8: Fire Kids. 8 and up, especially for school: iPad.
