Which Learning App for Which Age: 2 to 14
Our picks by age band from the nine apps we tested, and the one thing to check at each stage.
Ages 2–4
Khan Academy Kids (free) or HOMER. Check: sessions under 15 minutes and no reward shop.
Ages 4–7: learning to read
Reading Eggs for phonics; Khan Academy Kids alongside. Check: a placement test so the child starts at the right level.
Ages 6–10: school support
IXL for practice mapped to standards; Khan Academy for the explanations; Prodigy if motivation is the problem. Check: the parent report shows skills, not just minutes.
Ages 10–14
Khan Academy (free, through algebra and beyond) and IXL. Check: the app still works without a game wrapper — by this age the game is a distraction.
Any age
Turn off notifications, set a daily limit inside the app, and sit with the child for the first week.
