Frequently asked questions about kids learning apps

Are free learning apps good enough?
Khan Academy Kids and Khan Academy are free, ad-free and nonprofit, and they cover more ground than several paid apps in our test. Paid apps earn their price with adaptive practice (IXL), structured phonics (Reading Eggs) or a curriculum a child will actually follow (ABCmouse).
How much screen time is reasonable?
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests consistent limits rather than a fixed number for school-age children, and co-viewing for under-fives. Our engagement score rewards apps that pack learning into 15–20 minutes rather than stretching it with reward animations.
Which app helps most with school math?
IXL, because its skills map to state standards by grade and the practice adapts to the child. Prodigy makes practice feel like a game, which worked better for our reluctant 10-year-old, but the game is the point and the maths is thinner per minute.
How do you test kids' apps?
A parent sets up each app, then two children use it in 20-minute sessions over two weeks. We log what was practised, whether the child chose it again, every ad or purchase prompt seen, and what the parent dashboard reported. Learning is checked with the same short quiz before and after.

*Scores: Learning 30 · Engagement 20 · Parent tools 15 · Safety & ads 15 · Value 20; score = Σ ÷ 10, ties break on the earlier test date. Prices shown were checked on the date beside each and may change. Affiliate links are added only after a score is locked and can never change it. How we rank.
