What separates the best math apps for kids on this page?

Price is the first split. Khan Academy Kids and Khan Academy are free, Prodigy Math and ABCya have free tiers, and IXL, ABCmouse and Education.com are paid. The scores don't follow the price tags: Khan Academy Kids leads at 9.1, Khan Academy sits at 8.7, and IXL at 8.4 costs $9.95.

The second split is what the app actually does. IXL is practice, not teaching, and its own listing says a child who does not understand needs help elsewhere. Khan Academy teaches with video, then checks with mastery practice. Prodigy Math wraps every question in a fantasy RPG, which is why it scored 7.8 despite the highest engagement in the test.

Age range matters too. Khan Academy Kids stops at second grade. Khan Academy runs to AP and SAT. ABCmouse covers preschool to second grade across 10 levels.

What should you check before buying a math app?

The rubric weights learning at 30, engagement at 20, parent tools at 15, safety and ads at 15, and value at 20. Read the disliked lists against those weights.

  • Ads and safety: ABCya shows ads to children on the free tier. ABCmouse uses virtual-ticket rewards and a shop that pull attention from lessons.
  • Parent tools: IXL reports show exactly which standard needs work. Khan Academy Kids parent reports are simpler. ABCya has no profiles, no progress and no parent reports.
  • Teaching vs drilling: IXL's SmartScore adapts, but it does not explain. Khan Academy's video-then-practice loop fills that gap.
  • Value: Education.com costs $15.99 and is a printable library more than an app a child uses alone. ABCmouse costs $14.99 and cancellation requires contacting support.

Ages 2–8, no budget

Khan Academy Kids is free, ad-free, and our 6-year-old chose it unprompted on 11 of 14 days. It stops at second grade, so plan the next step.

Older kids through AP and SAT

Khan Academy goes to AP and SAT and stays free. Younger kids need a parent alongside, and reading and writing coverage is thinner than math.

Standards practice and reporting

IXL at $9.95 maps skills to each US state's standards by grade. Our 10-year-old moved up two grade levels in fractions. Expect to prompt a child who wants fun.

A reluctant child

Prodigy Math was chosen 14 of 14 days by our reluctant 10-year-old. Maths per minute is lower than IXL, and upgrade prompts appear inside the child view.

Printing and homeschooling

Education.com holds 37,000 printables searchable by standard, with a free tier of a few downloads a month. ABCmouse gives three child profiles and 10,000 activities for $14.99.

Quick browser games

ABCya offers 400+ games sorted by grade, free with ads or $6.99/mo ad-free.

For a free start with a young child, Khan Academy Kids covers ages 2–8 with no ads. If you need standards practice and reporting, IXL at $9.95 is the pick, and Prodigy Math suits a child who won't sit still for drills. Education.com and ABCmouse fit families who want printables or a full preschool-to-second-grade curriculum.

Questions about best math apps for kids

Are free learning apps good enough?
Khan Academy Kids and Khan Academy are free, ad-free and nonprofit, and they cover more ground than several paid apps in our test. Paid apps earn their price with adaptive practice (IXL), structured phonics (Reading Eggs) or a curriculum a child will actually follow (ABCmouse).
How much screen time is reasonable?
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests consistent limits rather than a fixed number for school-age children, and co-viewing for under-fives. Our engagement score rewards apps that pack learning into 15–20 minutes rather than stretching it with reward animations.
Which app helps most with school math?
IXL, because its skills map to state standards by grade and the practice adapts to the child. Prodigy makes practice feel like a game, which worked better for our reluctant 10-year-old, but the game is the point and the maths is thinner per minute.
How do you test kids' apps?
A parent sets up each app, then two children use it in 20-minute sessions over two weeks. We log what was practised, whether the child chose it again, every ad or purchase prompt seen, and what the parent dashboard reported. Learning is checked with the same short quiz before and after.
