American Home Shield (ShieldPlatinum) review 2026

The oldest name in the business, and the only one here that covers pre-existing faults it could not have detected — the clause that saves an older home

Is the American Home Shield Worth It?

Best for older homes. AHS is the contract to buy for a house whose history you do not know, because it is the only one that will not use "pre-existing" to refuse the first big claim. You pay noticeably more for that sentence.

American Home Shield Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Covers undetectable pre-existing conditions and improper installs — no other contract here does
  • Highest HVAC cap in the test at $5,000 on Platinum
  • You may use your own contractor if you get approval first
  • Trading since 1971; the largest network
Cons
  • $1,400 a year at two claims — the most expensive here
  • $100 to $125 service fee per visit
  • Complaint volume is high in absolute terms, though so is customer count
