Is the Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Worth It?

Best premium sonic toothbrush. The DiamondClean is the brush for someone who wants sonic gentleness with real coaching and will pay for the finish. The 4100 gets most of the way there for a fifth of the money.

  • Glass charger is pretty and easy to knock over

What problem does the Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 solve?

The DiamondClean 9000 is for the person who wants sonic gentleness with real coaching and will pay for the finish. It removed 85% of plaque in our test, the highest figure among the sonic brushes we ran, and it did so with the gentlest feel of the high scorers. The app's coverage map caught the spots our testers missed, and the heads tell the brush which mode to use. It is also the quietest brush here.

That combination is the point: a brush that cleans hard-to-reach areas without feeling harsh, and that shows you where you skipped. If you have sensitive gums and want app guidance, this is the brush the test supports.

How did it score in our test?

We scored it across five criteria for a total of 8.8 out of 10.

  • Cleaning performance: 32 out of 35. Plaque reduction was measured with disclosing tablets across six testers, and along the gumline specifically.
  • Comfort and pressure control: 19 out of 20. We judged noise, vibration in the hand, pressure sensor behaviour and gentleness on gums.
  • Battery and build: 14 out of 15. Days per charge at two minutes twice a day, charger type, water resistance and travel case.
  • Replacement head cost: 9 out of 15. Price per head at the recommended three-month change, and availability of third-party heads.
  • Modes and app: 14 out of 15. Brushing modes, timers and pacers, and whether the app coaching changed our testers' coverage.

The two near-perfect scores are comfort and modes/app. The one clear weak spot is head cost.

What does the DiamondClean 9000 do best?

Three measured results stand out. Plaque removal came in at 85%, the highest of the sonic brushes in this test. Battery life was 14 days in our test at two minutes twice a day. Head cost is $10 each.

Beyond the numbers, the app coverage map caught the spots our testers missed, which is the clearest evidence that the coaching changed behaviour rather than just logging it. The USB charging travel case and smart head recognition, where the heads tell the brush which mode to use, are practical touches. It was also the quietest brush in the group.

How does Sonic technology work?

Sonic brushes vibrate the bristles at high frequency rather than rotating a round head. The motion drives fluid between teeth and along the gumline while the bristle tips sweep plaque away. Philips Sonicare pairs that action with a pressure sensor that signals through a light and through the app, so you know when you are pressing too hard. The DiamondClean 9000 adds a coverage map in the app, which records where the brush has been so missed zones become visible.

What is it made of, and what comes in the box?

The spec sheet lists Sonic technology, 4 modes × 3 intensities, a pressure sensor that works through a light and the app, a battery that ran 14 days in our test, heads at $10 each, app support with a coverage map, and an ADA Seal. The charger is a glass design, and the travel case charges over USB. The glass charger is pretty and easy to knock over, which is the one build complaint our testers raised.

How does it compare with the other brushes we tested?

The Series 9 uses oscillating technology, has 7 modes, a light-ring pressure sensor, 14 days of battery, $8 heads, 3D tracking in the app, an ADA Seal and 88% plaque reduction. The Series 9 cleans more in our test and its heads cost less; the DiamondClean is quieter and its app coaching changed coverage for our testers.

Against the iO Series 5 at $100, the DiamondClean costs more than twice as much and scores 8.8 against 8.6. The Series 5 has oscillating technology, 5 modes, a light-ring pressure sensor, 14 days of battery, $8 heads, the Oral-B app, an ADA Seal and 88% plaque reduction. The Series 5 matches the higher plaque figure and undercuts the head price, but it does not have the coverage map.

Against the Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 at $110, the DiamondClean scores 8.8 against 8.4. The 6100 is also sonic, with 3 modes × 3 intensities, a pressure sensor, 14 days of battery, $8 heads, no app, an ADA Seal and 83% plaque reduction. The 6100 gives you the same sonic feel for less, but without the app coaching that improved our testers' coverage.

Where does the DiamondClean 9000 fall short?

Price and head cost are where it lost ground. The brush is $230, and premium heads run about $10 each, which is the highest head price in this comparison and the reason the replacement head cost criterion scored 9 out of 15. The brushing modes are more than most people use. The glass charger is pretty and easy to knock over.

Is the DiamondClean 9000 worth $230?

The price summary is $230. Heads cost $10 each at the recommended three-month change. That is the trade: you pay more up front and more per head than the $50 and $100 alternatives, and in return you get the gentlest feel of the high scorers, the quietest motor here, and an app that measurably improved our testers' coverage.

Who should buy the Sonicare DiamondClean 9000?

It remains right for sensitive gums and app users who want the best. If you want sonic gentleness with real coaching and will pay for the finish, this is the brush. If you mainly want the clean without the coaching, the 4100 gets most of the way there for a fifth of the money.
