Frequently asked questions about electric toothbrushes

Oscillating or sonic?
Both remove more plaque than a manual brush. Oral-B's round oscillating heads scored highest on plaque removal in our test; Sonicare's sonic brushes were gentler and quieter and scored best with testers who have sensitive gums. The difference between a $50 and a $300 brush from the same brand was far smaller than the difference from a manual brush.
Is an expensive toothbrush worth it?
Not for cleaning. The Oral-B Pro 1000 ($50) removed within four points of the iO Series 9 ($300) in our test. The extra money buys quieter motors, more modes, pressure sensors that light up, batteries that last weeks, travel cases and app coaching. The pressure sensor is the one upgrade dentists consistently recommend.
How often should I change the head?
Every three months, or when the bristles splay. Over a year that is four heads: about $20 for Oral-B and Sonicare heads bought in multipacks, $20 for quip's subscription, and $30 or more for Sonicare's premium heads. We priced this into the ranking.
How do you test toothbrushes?
Six testers each use every brush for a week. On the final day we score plaque with disclosing tablets before and after a two-minute brush using the brush's default mode, photograph and grade the result, and average the six. We run batteries from full at two minutes twice a day, measure noise, and price heads at the recommended three-month change.
