Frequently asked questions about coffee makers
What does SCA certified mean?
The Specialty Coffee Association certifies home brewers that hold water between 195°F and 205°F, brew a full carafe in four to eight minutes, and wet the grounds evenly. In our test the certified machines (Moccamaster, Breville, OXO, Bonavita) were the only ones that measured above 195°F at the grounds for the whole brew, and the taste panel ranked their pots highest.
Glass or thermal carafe?
Thermal if you drink over more than 20 minutes. A glass carafe on a hot plate cooked the coffee bitter within half an hour in our test; a thermal carafe kept it above 150°F for two hours. Thermal carafes are harder to see into and to clean.
Are pod machines worth it?
For one cup at a time with no cleanup, yes, and the Keurig K-Elite is the best of them. Pods cost 50–80 cents each against about 25 cents for a cup from a bag of beans, and pod coffee scored lowest with our panel. The Ninja DualBrew does both.
How do you test coffee makers?
Each machine brews the same medium-roast beans at 60 g per litre daily for a week. We log water temperature at the grounds with a probe, time the full pot, measure extraction with a refractometer, and have a five-person panel taste every pot blind. We then live with each machine: filling, filter handling, pouring, cleaning, descaling.
