What separates the best AI writing tools for teams?
Scores here run from 8.8 down to 7.7, and the gap is mostly about what each tool is for. Claude (8.8, $20) took first place on long-form and technical writing: both editors ranked its technical explainer and long-form draft first, and it held the brief and tone across 1,500 words without drifting. ChatGPT (8.7, $20) scored level with Claude on editing needed across the six briefs, and adds images, charts, data analysis and browsing in the same subscription. Grammarly (8.4, $12) is the editor rather than the writer — as a generative writer it scored 5, but it caught every real grammar issue our editors flagged in the rewrite brief.
Jasper (8.0, $69) is built for marketing teams: brand voice trained on our sample copy and held it across all six briefs, and the campaign feature generates a whole asset set from one brief. Notion AI (7.9, $10) answers from your own wiki and cites the page it took them from. Copy.ai (7.7, $49) chains research, drafting and enrichment into repeatable workflows, with a free tier of 2,000 words a month.
What should you check before buying?
Our scoring weights output quality at 30, control and brand voice at 20, workflow and integrations at 20, accuracy and disclosure at 15, and value at 15. Read the disliked lists against those weights.
- Accuracy: Claude still produced one unsupported claim across the six briefs, and ChatGPT's consumer tiers train on your chats unless you turn it off.
- Brand voice: ChatGPT's tone drifted toward generic marketing language on two briefs, and Grammarly's suggestions can flatten a distinctive voice if accepted wholesale.
- Fit with your stack: Notion AI is only useful if your team is already in Notion, and its long-form drafting is behind the dedicated tools.
- Price per seat: Jasper runs $39 a seat against $20 for the general assistants that outscored it, and Copy.ai costs $49 to get past the free tier.
