What separates the best VPN for multiple devices?

Two things matter most here: how many devices you can connect at once, and what you pay for that. NordVPN scores 9.2 and allows ten devices, not unlimited. Surfshark scores 9.0 and allows unlimited simultaneous connections at $2.19 a month on the 2-year plan. Private Internet Access scores 8.3, also unlimited devices, at $2.03 a month on the 3-year plan. Proton VPN scores 8.6 at $4.49.

Speed separates them too. NordVPN kept 91% of download speed to US-East on NordLynx. Proton VPN's speeds trailed NordVPN by nine points. Streaming is close: NordVPN unblocked 10 of 10 services on all three days, Surfshark 9 of 10, Proton VPN and PIA 8 of 10 each.

What should I check before buying a multi-device VPN?

Our scoring weights privacy at 30, speed at 25, streaming at 15, apps and devices at 15, and value at 15. So a cheap plan with weak privacy still loses points.

  • Device limit: NordVPN caps you at ten. Surfshark and PIA do not cap connections.
  • Jurisdiction: NordVPN is in Panama with five independent no-logs audits. Proton VPN is Swiss with open-source apps audited by a third party. Surfshark is in the Netherlands, inside 14-Eyes intelligence sharing. PIA is a US company whose no-logs claim was tested in US court cases and by two Deloitte audits.
  • Renewal price: NordVPN's renewal after the 2-year term is much higher than the intro rate. Surfshark's monthly plan is the most expensive in the ranking at $15.45.
  • Streaming gaps: Proton VPN had trouble with Hulu and Max. PIA failed Netflix UK and BBC iPlayer.

NordVPN — for speed and streaming

Ten devices is enough for most homes, and 91% speed retention plus 10 of 10 streaming services suits people who watch a lot. Budget for the renewal jump.

Surfshark — for many devices on a budget

Unlimited connections at $2.19 a month on the 2-year plan is the cheapest here, and 9 of 10 streaming services is close to the top. Skip the monthly plan.

Proton VPN — for privacy-first users

Swiss jurisdiction, open-source audited apps, Secure Core routing through Swiss, Icelandic or Swedish servers, and a free plan with no data cap and the same no-logs policy.

Private Internet Access — for the lowest long-term price

$2.03 a month on the 3-year plan with unlimited devices and open-source apps on every platform. Accept the US jurisdiction and the streaming misses.

For speed and streaming across a normal household, NordVPN is the pick, as long as you plan for the renewal price. Surfshark suits anyone connecting many devices on the lowest 2-year price, and Private Internet Access is the cheapest over three years with unlimited devices. Proton VPN is the one to choose if Swiss jurisdiction, audited open-source apps and a free tier matter more than streaming coverage.

Questions about best vpn for multiple devices

Does a VPN make me anonymous?
No. It hides your traffic from your ISP and your IP address from the sites you visit. Your VPN provider can see your traffic instead, which is why we weight jurisdiction and independent no-logs audits at 30% of the score.
Which VPN is fastest?
On our 1 Gbps line NordVPN retained the most download speed to US servers with NordLynx, followed by Surfshark and ExpressVPN on WireGuard-based protocols. Every service here kept at least 70% of the base speed to a nearby US server.
Is a free VPN safe?
Proton VPN's free tier is the only one we would use: same no-logs policy and Swiss jurisdiction as the paid plan, with fewer servers and no streaming. Free VPNs from unknown companies often log and sell traffic.
How do you test VPNs?
Same computer, same 1 Gbps line, five servers per service (US-East, US-West, UK, Germany, Japan), three runs each at three times of day. Streaming is checked on three consecutive days. We read every audit report and the privacy policy in full.
