NordVPN (Basic, 2-year plan) review 2027
Fastest in our tests, unblocked every streaming service three days running, and audited for no-logs five times
Is the NordVPN Worth It?
Best VPN overall. NordVPN led the speed test to every region, unblocked all ten streaming services on all three days, and has the audit history to back its no-logs claim. It is not the cheapest and not unlimited on devices, which is where Surfshark takes points back. For most people it is the one to buy.
NordVPN Pros & Cons
- Retained 91% of download speed to US-East on NordLynx
- 10 of 10 streaming services unblocked on all three days
- Panama jurisdiction and five independent no-logs audits
- Threat Protection blocks trackers and malware in the app
- Renewal after the 2-year term is much higher than the intro rate
- Ten devices, not unlimited
- Meshnet and dedicated IP are upsells
What problem does NordVPN solve?
NordVPN is built for people who want speed and streaming to work without fiddling. In our tests it led the speed test to every region, unblocked all ten streaming services on all three days, and carries the audit history to back its no-logs claim. That combination is the benefit: a connection that keeps up with a 1 Gbps line and a set of streaming apps that open from abroad.
The problem it answers is the usual one — a VPN that slows you down or fails to load the show you want. NordVPN retained 91% of download speed to US-East on NordLynx, and Threat Protection blocks trackers and malware inside the app. It is not the cheapest and not unlimited on devices, which is where Surfshark takes points back. For most people it is the one to buy.
How did it score 9.2?
- Privacy — 27 of 30. Measures jurisdiction, an independently audited no-logs policy, RAM-only servers and anonymous payment.
- Speed — 24 of 25. Measures download retention on a 1 Gbps line to US, UK and Japan servers, using WireGuard where offered.
- Streaming — 15 of 15. Netflix US/UK, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, Hulu and Max from abroad on three consecutive days.
- Apps & devices — 14 of 15. Simultaneous connections, router and TV support, kill switch and split tunnelling on every platform.
- Value — 12 of 15. Price per month on the 2-year plan and what it renews at.
The only place it lost ground was value, where the 2-year intro renews at a much higher rate.
Where does NordVPN stand out?
Speed is the clearest strength. It retained 91% of download speed to US-East on NordLynx, and it led the speed test to every region we tested. Streaming was perfect in our run: 10 of 10 services unblocked on all three days.
Privacy is close behind. NordVPN sits under Panama jurisdiction and has passed five independent no-logs audits, the most recent being Deloitte, 2024. Threat Protection blocks trackers and malware in the app, so you get some protection even when the VPN is off.
How do NordLynx and NordWhisper work?
NordLynx is NordVPN's build of WireGuard. WireGuard keeps its codebase small and uses modern cryptography, which is why it tends to be fast on long-distance links. NordLynx adds a double NAT system so the protocol can assign addresses without storing a permanent link between your account and your traffic.
NordWhisper is the second protocol in the app, alongside OpenVPN. It is designed for networks that try to detect and block VPN traffic, such as some hotel, campus and office connections. You pick it when a standard tunnel will not connect.
What do you actually get?
The network covers 7,400+ servers in 118 countries. You can connect 10 devices at once, and the plan includes a 30-day money-back window with no free tier.
- Jurisdiction: Panama
- No-logs audit: Deloitte, 2024 (fifth no-logs audit)
- Protocols: NordLynx (WireGuard), OpenVPN, NordWhisper
- 2-year plan: 3.39 /mo
- Monthly plan: 12.99 /mo
Meshnet and dedicated IP are upsells, so the headline price does not include every feature in the app.
How does it compare with the rivals we tested?
Surfshark scored 9 and costs $2.19 on the 2-year plan. It runs 3,200+ servers in 100 countries under Netherlands jurisdiction, with a Deloitte audit from 2023 and unlimited simultaneous devices. NordVPN has more servers, more countries and a newer audit, but Surfshark is cheaper and does not cap devices.
ExpressVPN scored 8.6 at $4.99 on the 2-year plan. It has 3,000+ servers in 105 countries, 8 devices, British Virgin Islands jurisdiction and KPMG 2022 plus Cure53 app audits. NordVPN is faster in our tests and cheaper, while ExpressVPN's apps are the more polished of the two.
Proton VPN also scored 8.6, at $4.49 on the 2-year plan. It runs 12,000+ servers in 120 countries, allows 10 devices, sits in Switzerland, and has a Securitum 2024 audit with open-source apps. It also has a free tier, which NordVPN does not.

Where does NordVPN fall short?
Value is the weak point. The 2-year intro renews at a much higher rate, so the low monthly figure only holds for the first term. If you stay past that, the price climbs.
The device cap is the second issue. Ten devices is generous, but Surfshark and Private Internet Access both allow unlimited connections on one subscription. Meshnet and dedicated IP are upsells, so some of the features people associate with the brand cost extra.
Is it worth the price?
On the 2-year plan NordVPN is $3.39 per month, against $12.99 per month if you pay monthly. The 30-day money-back window covers you if it does not work out, and there is no free tier to try first.
The caveat is renewal: the 2-year intro renews at a much higher rate. Budget for that if you plan to keep the subscription long term.
Who should buy NordVPN?
It is right for anyone who wants speed and streaming without thinking about it. If you care most about raw download retention, unblocking every major service, and an audited no-logs record, this is the one to buy.
If your priority is the lowest long-term price or unlimited devices, Surfshark and Private Internet Access take those points back. For most people, though, NordVPN is the pick.
