Frequently asked questions about tv streaming services
Which streaming service has the most to watch?
Netflix and Prime Video have the largest libraries by count; Max has the deepest film catalogue (Warner, HBO, Studio Ghibli, TCM classics); Disney+ has the family franchises. On our 40-title checklist of well-known films and series, Netflix had 19, Max 17, Prime Video 15, Hulu 14, Disney+ 12, Peacock 11, Paramount+ 10, Apple TV+ 5.
Are the ad tiers worth it?
They halve the price for 3–5 minutes of ads an hour. Netflix and Disney+ ad tiers ran about 4 minutes an hour in our month; Peacock and Hulu closer to 6; Prime Video's ads are on by default unless you pay $2.99 more. For background viewing they are fine; for films, pay for ad-free.
Can I still share passwords?
Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and Max now charge for or block use outside the household. Prime Video allows a Household of two adults. If sharing was the point, factor in the extra-member fee ($8–$10 a month) or a family plan.
How do you test streaming services?
One month each, on the same LG OLED, iPhone and MacBook, with the same 300 Mbps connection. We search a 40-title checklist on one day, measure delivered bitrate on 4K titles, time ad breaks on ad tiers, test downloads and profiles, and price the plans on the day. Catalogues change monthly; we re-check quarterly.
