Can I really file for free?
Yes, and more people can than do. IRS Direct File is free in 25 states for common situations; Cash App Taxes is free for federal and state with almost every form; FreeTaxUSA is free federal with a $14.99 state. The "free" editions of TurboTax and H&R Block cover only simple returns — a 1099 or itemising pushes you into a paid tier.
Is TurboTax worth the price?
It produced the same refund as the CPA on all three returns and its interview was the easiest to follow, especially for the investor return with brokerage import. It also cost two to four times more than FreeTaxUSA for the same result. Worth it if you value the hand-holding; not if you know your way around a Schedule C.
Do I need a human?
Our three test returns did not, and every product here reached the right answer with care. If you have a business with employees, foreign income, a K-1 or an estate, the live-expert tiers (TurboTax Live, H&R Block's tax pro review) or a CPA are worth the money.
How do you test tax software?
A CPA prepares three returns from the same documents. We then prepare each return in every product, note where the interview missed a deduction or credit, time the process, count upsell screens, and record the price for federal plus one state at the tier the return required. We compare the refund to the CPA's.
