Frequently asked questions about stock photo & creative asset sites
Which stock site is the best value?
Envato Elements for anyone who needs more than a handful of assets a month: unlimited downloads of photos, video, music, templates and fonts for about $16.50 a month on an annual plan. For a few high-end photos a month, Adobe Stock or Shutterstock have the stronger photography; for design templates and quick edits Canva Pro is the better tool.
Can I keep using assets after I cancel?
Envato Elements, Storyblocks and Freepik licence each download at the time you download it; assets stay licensed for projects you registered or used while subscribed. Adobe Stock and Shutterstock licences are perpetual for downloaded assets. Canva Pro content used in a design stays in that design but cannot be re-used in new ones after cancelling. Read each licence for the details; this is a summary, not legal advice.
What is legal indemnification?
A promise that the service will cover you if an asset turns out to infringe someone's rights (a missing model release, a trademark in the frame). Adobe Stock, Shutterstock, Getty/iStock and Envato Elements offer it; the amount and conditions vary by plan. It matters for advertising and print runs, less for a blog.
How do you test stock sites?
Twenty briefs covering photos, vectors, video, music, sound effects and templates are searched on every service. Two designers score the first page of each result blind for fit and quality. We read each licence for commercial use, print-run limits, model releases, indemnification and post-cancellation rights, test the plugins, and price the plan a small team needing about 20 assets a month would take.
