What does the Vari do better than the rest?

Assembly is the headline and it is not close. Nine minutes, no tools, one person. The next quickest desk in our test took 18 minutes, and the slowest took 42. If you have ever given up halfway through a desk build, that gap is the entire argument.

The top is a solid laminate that resists marking, which matters on a desk you will eat lunch at. Cable management is built into the frame rather than sold as an accessory, so the underside stays tidy without extra spending. How does a dual-motor lift system work?

A dual-motor desk puts one electric motor in each leg rather than driving both legs from a single motor and a connecting rod. Each motor turns a threaded rod inside its leg, and the desktop rides up or down on that thread. Because the two legs move independently, the control box keeps them level with each other as they travel. Where does the Vari fall short?

Price, warranty and capacity, in that order. At $795 it is the most expensive desk in this test. The 200 lb capacity is well below the rest of the group, where rivals are rated from 275 lb to 355 lb. And the 5-year warranty sits against 12 to 15 years elsewhere. If you plan to hang monitors, a PC and a heavy load on the frame, or you keep desks for a decade, those three numbers matter more than nine minutes of setup.
