Standing Desk Wobble: What We Measured and How to Reduce It
Six desks measured with a dial gauge, and four things that cut sway on a desk you already own.

The numbers
Lateral sway at full standing height with 40 lb loaded: Uplift 2 mm, Jarvis 3 mm, FlexiSpot E7 Pro 4 mm, Branch 5 mm, Vari 5 mm, FlexiSpot EN1 8 mm. Under 4 mm feels planted. Over 8 mm and the monitor moves while you type.
What causes it
- Number of motors and legs. Every dual-motor desk here beat every single-motor one.
- Leg section count. Three-stage legs are stiffer at height than two-stage.
- Frame geometry. C-frames give foot room; T-frames are usually stiffer.
- Height. Sway roughly doubles between seated and full standing height on every desk.
Fixing a desk you own
- Lower it an inch. Most sway appears in the last two inches of travel.
- Tighten every bolt after two weeks — they all loosen once.
- Put the heaviest item over a leg, not in the middle of the span.
- Add a crossbar or a rear anti-collision brace if the maker sells one; it is the single biggest improvement available.
- If it sits against a wall, felt pads on the back edge stop it rocking into the wall.
