Frequently asked questions about photo editing software

Lightroom or Photoshop?
Lightroom organises and develops whole shoots; Photoshop edits one image in depth with layers and compositing. Most photographers live in Lightroom and open Photoshop for retouching. The Photography plan includes both.
Is there a good one-time-purchase alternative to Adobe?
Yes. Affinity Photo 2 ($69.99) replaces Photoshop for most people; ON1 Photo RAW ($99.99) and DxO PhotoLab replace Lightroom for developing, and Capture One offers a perpetual licence. Luminar Neo sells lifetime deals regularly.
Do I need to shoot RAW?
If you edit at all, yes: RAW keeps the sensor's full data, so exposure and white balance can be changed after the fact without damage. Every editor in this ranking except GIMP develops RAW natively.
How do you test photo editors?
Same 200 RAW files from Sony, Canon and Fujifilm bodies, on the same machine. We compare default conversions and noise reduction at 200%, edit the same portrait and landscape as far as each tool allows, time a cull and an export, and price each editor over three years.
