Frequently asked questions about online courses

Are online course certificates worth anything?
Certificates from Coursera and edX carry the university's or company's name (Google, IBM, Meta, Stanford, MIT) and are recognised by employers for entry-level roles. Udemy, Skillshare and MasterClass certificates are proof of completion only. A portfolio of finished projects matters more than any certificate.
Subscription or pay per course?
A subscription (Coursera Plus, LinkedIn Learning, DataCamp, Skillshare) wins if you will finish more than one course every two months. Pay-per-course (Udemy, edX verified certificates) wins for a single skill you need once — buy Udemy courses on sale, which is most weeks.
Can I get a real degree online?
Yes. Coursera and edX host bachelor's and master's degrees from accredited universities (Illinois, Georgia Tech, Imperial, Michigan, Texas), typically at a third to a half of on-campus tuition. Admission is through the university, not the platform.
How do you test course platforms?
Same three subjects on every platform, completed by the same team members. We score how much the catalogue covers, what the credential is, how well the courses teach (graded work, projects, feedback), the price per month of learning, and the apps.

*Scores: Catalogue 25 · Credentials 20 · Teaching quality 25 · Value 20 · Experience 10; score = Σ ÷ 10, ties break on the earlier test date.
