Coursera sells university and employer courses on a subscription; Udemy sells individual courses from independent instructors. Both had excellent Python courses in our test.

Pick Coursera when

  • You need a certificate with a recognisable name (Google, IBM, a university).
  • You will take several courses in the next year — Plus at $399/yr covers most of the catalogue.
  • You want graded work and a structured path.

Pick Udemy when

  • You need one specific skill (a framework, a tool, an exam) now.
  • You want to keep the course forever.
  • You can wait for a sale — the same course is $12.99 most weeks.

Both

Audit Coursera courses free and buy Udemy courses on sale, and a year of learning can cost under $100.
