Is the Aura Worth It?

Best identity theft protection overall. Aura caught everything we threw at it, insures the thing people actually lose — money — and bundles the tools others sell separately, at a price below LifeLock. It is the service to buy for most households.

What problem does Aura identity theft protection solve?

Aura is built for the household that wants one subscription instead of a stack of them. It caught all six seeded events we threw at it, including a credit inquiry alert in 14 minutes, and it carries stolen-funds reimbursement up to $1 million on every plan. The family plan covers five adults and unlimited kids with parental controls, and data-broker removal ran automatically and showed results. That combination is why it is the service to buy for most households and why it is still right for families and anyone who wants one subscription for security.

How did Aura score in our testing?

We scored Aura across five criteria for a total of 8.8 out of 10.

  • Monitoring & alerts: 27 out of 30. We measured which of our six seeded events each service caught and how fast, plus one-, two- or three-bureau credit monitoring. Aura monitors three bureaus and caught all six events, with a credit inquiry alert in 14 minutes.
  • Restoration & insurance: 22 out of 25. This criterion covers a dedicated case manager, limited power of attorney, and the insurance limit for stolen funds and expenses. Aura provides US-based case managers, 24/7, and $1M stolen funds + $1M expenses per adult.
  • Tools: 15 out of 15. We looked for credit lock, data-broker removal, password manager, VPN, antivirus and parental features. Aura includes all of them: credit lock through Experian, automated data-broker removal, and VPN, antivirus, password manager, parental controls and safe browsing.
  • Family & ease: 9 out of 10. This measures child and elder coverage, number of adults, app clarity and alert noise. The family plan covers five adults plus unlimited children, though the app is busy with many features and many notifications.
  • Value: 15 out of 20. We judged the annual price for one adult and for a family, at renewal. Aura is $144 per year for an individual and $384 per year for a family.

Where Aura stood out in our tests

The measured results are the clearest story. Aura caught 6/6 seeded events, and the credit inquiry alert arrived in 14 minutes. Insurance runs to $1,000,000 for stolen funds, and that coverage applies on every plan rather than only the most expensive tier. The family plan covers five adults and unlimited children with parental controls, and automated data-broker removal ran without us prompting it and showed results. Those four points are what separate it from the rest of the field we tested.

What is included in Aura, and how is it built?

Aura's plan is a bundle rather than a single monitoring feed. The individual plan is $144 per year and the family plan is $384 per year. It monitors three credit bureaus. Insurance is $1M stolen funds + $1M expenses per adult. Restoration is handled by US-based case managers, 24/7. Credit lock is included through Experian, and data-broker removal is automated. Bundled tools are VPN, antivirus, password manager, parental controls and safe browsing. The family plan covers five adults plus unlimited children.

How does Aura compare with Norton LifeLock, IDShield and Zander?

Against Norton LifeLock Ultimate Plus (7.9, $239.99), Aura is ahead on price and on data-broker removal: Norton's broker removal is an add-on through Privacy Monitor Assistant, while Aura's is automated and included. Norton monitors three bureaus and bundles Norton 360 antivirus, VPN, password manager and 250 GB backup, and its family plan covers 2 adults + 5 kids against Aura's 5 adults + unlimited children. Norton's Ultimate Plus carries $1M stolen funds + $1M expenses.

Against IDShield (7.8, $179.40), Aura is ahead on tools and family size. IDShield uses licensed private investigators for restoration with unlimited consultation and offers $3M expenses, with stolen funds up to $1M on some plans. It monitors 1 or 3 bureaus, has no credit lock (freeze guidance instead), and its family plan covers 2 adults + up to 10 dependants. Aura includes credit lock and covers 5 adults + unlimited children.

Against Zander Identity Theft Protection (7.8, $105), Aura is ahead on monitoring and tools. Zander monitors 1 bureau on Elite, has no credit lock and no data-broker removal, and its bundled tools are dark web, SSN and home title monitoring, with credit added on Elite. Zander does carry $1M stolen funds + $1M expenses and unlimited, dedicated US-based specialists, and its family plan covers 2 adults + up to 10 children. Zander is the cheaper restoration-focused option; Aura is the broader one.

Where does Aura fall short?

Ease is where it lost ground: there is a lot going on in the app. Our testers found the app busy, with many features and many notifications. The bundled antivirus and VPN are adequate rather than best-in-class. Renewal is at the same rate, but intro discounts vary, so the price you see at sign-up may not be the price you see later. It still finished first in a field of seven.

Is Aura worth the price?

Aura costs $144 per year for an individual and $384 per year for a family. The individual plan is below Norton LifeLock Ultimate Plus at $239.99 and Experian IdentityWorks at $299.88, and above IDShield at $179.40 and Zander at $105. The family plan at $384 is below Norton's $479.99 and Experian's $419.88, and above IDShield's $359.40 and Zander's $175. Renewal is at the same rate, though intro discounts vary.

Who should buy Aura?

Families and anyone who wants one subscription for security. If you want three-bureau monitoring, $1 million in stolen-funds coverage, automated data-broker removal and bundled VPN, antivirus and password manager in a single plan, Aura is the service to buy for most households.
