Frequently asked questions about baby monitors

WiFi or non-WiFi baby monitor?
Non-WiFi (local radio) monitors turn on instantly, cannot be hacked from the internet and never drop because the router hiccupped; they only work at home. WiFi monitors let you check in from anywhere and add sleep analytics, but need a strong router, a phone, and often a subscription. Our testers preferred non-WiFi for the nursery and WiFi for travel and grandparents.
Do breathing monitors prevent SIDS?
No device is proven to reduce SIDS, and the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend monitors for that purpose. The Owlet Dream Sock is FDA-cleared to track pulse rate and oxygen and alert on readings outside preset ranges; Nanit's breathing band tracks motion. Both gave our testers peace of mind; neither replaces safe-sleep practice.
What resolution do I need?
Less than you think. 720p on a 5-inch parent unit was perfectly clear at 3 m in our nursery; 1080p matters for WiFi monitors viewed full-screen on a phone. Night-vision quality and field of view mattered more than pixels in our test.
How do you test baby monitors?
Same nursery, same crib, same seven nights per monitor. A parent logs picture quality in the dark, every signal dropout across two floors and the garden, latency, false motion or breathing alarms, and parent-unit battery. We read each privacy policy and check for two-factor login and local storage.
