What separates the cheapest SSL certificate options?

Price is the easy part. The four picks here split on what you get alongside the certificate. SSLs.com scores 8.5 and costs $3.88 — the only paid option, and the only one with a warranty and a support desk. Let's Encrypt scores 8.3 at Free, with encryption identical to any paid certificate and renewal every 90 days with no action. ZeroSSL scores 8.1, free with paid plans from $10/mo, adding a dashboard and expiry alerts. Google Trust Services scores 7.7, free including wildcards, but wants a Google Cloud project and API setup.

Our scoring puts issuance and validation at 25, coverage at 20, warranty and assurance at 15, support and tooling at 15, and value at 25. That is why a free certificate can sit near a paid one: value carries as much weight as issuance.

What should you check before buying a cheap SSL certificate?

Start with validation type. Let's Encrypt and Google Trust Services are domain validation only — no verified company name in the certificate. If you need a company name shown, none of the free picks do it.

Then look at coverage and renewal:

  • Wildcards: free from Google Trust Services; on ZeroSSL they need the $50 Premium plan.
  • Certificate limits: ZeroSSL's free tier is capped at three certificates.
  • Renewal cost: SSLs.com renewal prices are higher than the first year.
  • Support: SSLs.com is chat and ticket only; the free authorities have no support desk at all.

Check what your host already does. Let's Encrypt is built into cPanel, Plesk, CloudPanel, Caddy, Cloudflare and most hosts, and issues in under a minute. Google Trust Services is automatic on Google Cloud Load Balancing and App Engine. If your setup already handles it, you may not need to buy anything.

SSLs.com — if you want a warranty and a human to call

At $3.88 with Sectigo roots and DV issued in six minutes in our test, it fits buyers who want a paid certificate with assurance behind it.

Let's Encrypt — if you just want HTTPS working

Free, trusted by every browser, and self-renewing every 90 days. The default for most sites.

ZeroSSL — if you want free plus a dashboard

Free certificates with expiry alerts and an ACME endpoint, so existing Certbot setups can point at it. Paid plans from $10/mo add one-year certificates.

Google Trust Services — if you live in Google Cloud

Free wildcards over standard ACME, automatic on Google Cloud Load Balancing and App Engine.

For most sites, Let's Encrypt covers HTTPS at no cost and renews itself every 90 days. Buy SSLs.com at $3.88 if you want a warranty and a support desk, pick ZeroSSL if you want free certificates with a dashboard and expiry alerts, and choose Google Trust Services if your infrastructure already runs on Google Cloud.

Questions about cheapest ssl certificates

Do I need to pay for an SSL certificate at all?
Usually not. Let's Encrypt and ZeroSSL issue free domain-validated certificates that every modern browser trusts exactly as much as a paid one, and most hosts install and renew them automatically. Encryption strength is identical. You pay for three things a free certificate does not give you: organisation or extended validation that shows your verified company name, a warranty, and a support line when installation goes wrong.
Does a paid certificate make my site rank better or look safer?
No on both counts, for a standard site. Google treats HTTPS the same regardless of who issued the certificate, and browsers stopped showing the green company name for EV certificates years ago. A paid OV or EV certificate still makes sense when a procurement team, a payment processor or a compliance auditor asks to see verified organisation details in the certificate.
What is a wildcard certificate?
One certificate covering every subdomain at one level — shop, blog, app and the rest — instead of one per host. Let's Encrypt issues wildcards free but requires a DNS challenge, which is fiddlier to automate. Paid wildcards run $50 to $200 a year and come with a simpler tool.
How do you test SSL providers?
We buy the cheapest certificate each provider sells, run the validation, install it on the same test domain and record the total time from payment to a trusted padlock. We read the warranty terms and refund window, test the CSR generator and any installation tooling, and send support the same real installation question.
