What problem does the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 solve?

On an Android phone the Galaxy Watch 7 comes closest to what the Apple Watch does for iPhones, and on a Samsung phone it does more health monitoring than anything else here. That is the short version of the verdict, and it explains who the watch is for: Android and especially Samsung phone owners.

The tagline calls it the Apple Watch of the Android world, and the test results back that up. It runs full Wear OS, so you get Google Maps, Wallet, Assistant and Play Store apps. On a Samsung phone it adds ECG, blood pressure with calibration and sleep apnoea detection. The dual-band GPS stayed within 1% on our 5K, and there is a body-composition sensor. Battery is Apple-like too, which is a benefit only if you accept what Apple-like means in practice.

How did it score in our tests?

Health and fitness accuracy is the biggest category at 30 points, and the Galaxy Watch 7 earned 25. We measured heart rate against a chest strap on runs and intervals, GPS distance against a reference on a measured 5K, sleep staging consistency, and ECG and SpO2 where offered. The dual-band GPS result was the standout here.

Battery is worth 20 points and the watch took 10. We measure days per charge with always-on display and a daily 30-minute GPS workout, and the result was 1.5 days.

Smart features and ecosystem is another 20 points, where it scored 18. That covers notifications and replies, payments, apps, calls, phone compatibility and safety features. Full Wear OS is why this score is high.

Design and display is 10 points, and it earned 9. We look at screen brightness and readability outdoors, size options, materials, water rating and comfort in sleep.

Value is 20 points, and it scored 15. That reflects the price and any subscription needed for headline features. There is no subscription required here.

What does the Galaxy Watch 7 do best?

The dual-band GPS is the most concrete strength. On our measured 5K it stayed within 1% of the reference, which is the kind of accuracy that matters if you run or ride with the watch and want distance you can trust.

The body-composition sensor is unusual in this group. It measures body composition rather than just weight or activity, and it is one of the features that separates the Galaxy Watch 7 from most rivals.

On a Samsung phone, the health monitoring goes further than anything else here: ECG, blood pressure with calibration and sleep apnoea detection. The full Wear OS platform adds Google Maps, Wallet, Assistant and Play Store apps, so the smart side is not a compromise.

How do dual-band GPS and ECG actually work?

Dual-band GPS receives satellite signals on two frequency bands instead of one. The second band helps the watch tell a direct signal from one that has bounced off buildings or terrain, which reduces the position errors that show up as a drifting route line.

An ECG works differently. The watch measures the tiny electrical signal your heart produces through electrodes, usually on the back of the case and the crown or bezel. You rest a finger on the contact for about half a minute, and the watch records the rhythm so it can flag signs of an irregular heartbeat. It is a single-lead reading, not a full clinical ECG.

What is it made of and what does it include?

The display is AMOLED, and the watch comes in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes. The water rating is 5 ATM plus IP68, so it is protected against splashes, rain and swimming, and against dust.

There is an LTE option if you want calls and data without your phone. GPS is dual-band. ECG is available on Samsung phones. It works with Android and is best with Samsung. There is no subscription needed for the headline features.

How does it compare with the rivals we tested?

The Apple Watch Series 10 scored 8.1 at $399. Against it, the Galaxy Watch 7 matches the battery figure and the LTE option, but it is an Android watch, so the two do not compete for the same phone.

The Garmin Forerunner 265 scored 7.9 at $449.99. It works with iPhone and Android, has multi-band GNSS, no ECG, no LTE, a 5 ATM water rating, an AMOLED display, 42 mm and 46 mm sizes, and 11 days of measured battery. It is ahead on battery and behind on ECG and LTE.

The Garmin Venu 3 scored 7.9 at $449.99. It works with iPhone and Android, has GPS, an ECG app in select regions, no LTE, 5 ATM, AMOLED, 41 mm and 45 mm sizes, and 12 days of measured battery. Again, battery is the clear Garmin advantage.

The Amazfit Balance scored 7.8 at $229.99. It works with iPhone and Android, has dual-band GPS, no ECG, no LTE, 5 ATM, AMOLED, a single 46 mm size, and 13 days of measured battery. It undercuts the Samsung on price and battery but lacks ECG and LTE.

The OnePlus Watch 3 scored 7.7 at $329.99. It works with Android only, has dual-band GPS, an ECG app, no LTE, 5 ATM and IP68, an AMOLED sapphire display, a single 46 mm size, and 5 days of measured battery. It matches the Samsung on price and beats it on battery, but it has no LTE option.

Where does the Galaxy Watch 7 fall short?

Battery is the main shortfall. We measured 1.5 days, and the score breakdown gives it 10 out of 20. That is the same figure as the Apple Watch Series 10, but well behind the Garmin models at 11 and 12 days, the Amazfit Balance at 13 days and the OnePlus Watch 3 at 5 days.

Some features are Samsung-only. ECG and blood pressure need a Samsung phone, so the health monitoring that makes this watch stand out is not fully available on other Android phones.

Heart rate lagged Apple and Garmin on intervals. Our measured HR error against a strap was 2.4 bpm, and the lag showed up specifically during interval work.

Is the Galaxy Watch 7 good value?

The price is $329.99, and there is no subscription needed for the headline features. Value scored 15 out of 20. That puts it in line with the OnePlus Watch 3 at the same price, above the Amazfit Balance at $229.99, and below the Apple Watch Series 10 at $399 and the two Garmin watches at $449.99.

Who should buy the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7?

It is still right for Android and especially Samsung phone owners. If you carry a Samsung phone, you get the full set of health monitoring, including ECG, blood pressure with calibration and sleep apnoea detection, plus the body-composition sensor and dual-band GPS that stayed within 1% on our 5K.

If you use a non-Samsung Android phone, you still get full Wear OS with Google Maps, Wallet, Assistant and Play Store apps, but you lose the Samsung-only health features. If battery life is your priority, the Garmin and Amazfit watches in this group last far longer.
