If you wake up hot, the Purple is the answer: nothing else here measured cooler, and the pressure relief for side sleepers is real. The feel is the risk — use the trial. That is the verdict from our test of the Purple Mattress, a 9.25" gel grid bed that finished sixth of ten mattresses tested with a score of 7.9.

The problem it targets is straightforward. Memory foam and many hybrids trap heat, and hot sleepers wake up uncomfortable. What are the standout strengths?

Cooling is the headline. The Purple's surface stayed within 1°F of room temperature after 30 minutes under a heated pad, the best result in the test and the only criterion where it earned full points. For anyone who overheats at night, that is the number that matters.

Pressure relief is the second strength. The grid collapses under the shoulder and holds the hip, and the pressure-mat readings for side sleepers were excellent. The polymer grid also resists body impressions, so the surface you buy is the surface you keep. Availability is another practical plus: the bed is sold and shipped via Amazon as well as direct.

How does the GelFlex Grid work?

Where does the Purple Mattress fall short?

Edge support is the clearest weakness, scoring 6 of 10. Sink under a seated 200 lb load at the edge was noticeable, and the roll-off feel was poor. If you sit on the edge of the bed to dress or share a smaller size, that matters.

The feel is polarising. One tester never adjusted to the grid, and the same property that makes it cool and pressure-relieving makes it unusual underhand. It is also heavy to move, and at 9.25" it may look low on a platform bed.

Is the Purple Mattress good value?

The queen list price is $1,399, and value scored 10 of 15 based on the usual sale price, the 100-night trial and return cost. The trial is the key part of the value case: it is long enough to decide whether the grid feel works for you, and short enough that you should test it deliberately rather than drift.
