Is the Sony WH-1000XM6 Worth It?

Best noise-cancelling headphones overall. The XM6 fixes the two complaints about the XM5 — it folds and it handles wind — and its cancelling, calls and features add up to the most complete package here. It costs $50 more than the XM5 did, which is the only reason to look at last year's model.

Sony WH-1000XM6 Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Best combined noise cancelling and call quality in the test
  • Folds again — the XM5 did not
  • LDAC and a 10-band EQ in the app
  • Quick charge: three minutes for three hours
Cons
  • $449.99 at launch
  • Sound is tuned warm out of the box; needs the EQ
  • No IP rating

What problem does the Sony WH-1000XM6 solve for commuters and flyers?

The XM6 is built for people who want one pair of headphones to cover the whole trip: the cabin roar, the platform announcement, the call that arrives while you are walking to the gate. Sony's own framing is that it fixes the two complaints about the XM5 — it folds and it handles wind — and that its cancelling, calls and features add up to the most complete package in this test. That is the benefit in plain terms: you do not need a second pair for flights and a third for calls.

The measured cabin noise cut is 31 dB, and the test notes call out the best combined noise cancelling and call quality in the test. The folding hinge returns, which the XM5 did not have, so the headphones pack smaller in a bag. Quick charge gives three minutes for three hours, which covers a forgotten charge before a short flight. LDAC and a 10-band EQ in the app let you adjust the tuning, which matters because the out-of-box sound is warm.

How did it score in each test category?

The XM6 finished on 8.8 out of 10, second of seven tested pairs. The score breaks down across five criteria.

  • Noise cancelling — 29 out of 30. This measures attenuation of recorded cabin, train and office noise at the ear simulator, plus wind handling outdoors. It is the highest-weighted criterion and the XM6 gave up a single point.
  • Sound quality — 22 out of 25. Frequency response against a target curve, distortion at volume, and blind listening on the same playlist.
  • Comfort & build — 13 out of 15. Clamp force, weight, heat after two hours, hinge and case quality. At 254 g it is not the lightest pair here.
  • Battery & features — 14 out of 15. Measured battery with ANC on, multipoint, codecs, call quality, wear detection and app controls. The measured figure was 31 h against a 30 h spec.
  • Value — 10 out of 15. Street price against the field. This is where it lost the review: value, at $449.99.

Where does the Sony WH-1000XM6 stand out?

The strongest result is the combination of cancelling and call quality, which the test describes as the best in the group. The 31 dB cabin noise cut is a measured figure, not a claim, and wind handling outdoors was part of the same criterion — the area the XM5 struggled with.

Battery is the second concrete strength. The spec is 30 h with ANC on and the measured result was 31 h, with three minutes of charging returning three hours of playback. Weight is 254 g, which sits between the Bose QuietComfort Ultra at 250 g and the Sennheiser Momentum 4 at 293 g.

The feature set is the third: LDAC and LC3 codecs, multipoint, a 10-band EQ in the app, and the folding hinge that the XM5 dropped.

How do LDAC, LC3 and multipoint actually work?

LDAC is a Bluetooth audio codec that carries more data than SBC or AAC, so a compatible Android phone can send a higher-bitrate stream to the headphones. LC3 is the codec used by LE Audio; it is designed to hold quality at lower bitrates and to leave room for extra streams. Multipoint lets the headphones stay connected to two devices at once, so a laptop and a phone can both be paired and the headphones switch to whichever is playing. Quick charge is a charging behaviour rather than a codec: a short USB-C top-up returns a set number of playback hours. The XM6 lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3, multipoint, and USB-C charging at three minutes for three hours.

What is in the box and how is it built?

The spec sheet lists a 30 h battery with ANC on, a weight of 254 g, codecs SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3, multipoint support, a folding hinge, a 3.5 mm wired input, USB-C charging at three minutes for three hours, and a May 2025 release. The wired input means you can run them passively from an in-flight system or a laptop jack. The folding hinge is the physical change from the XM5, which did not fold. There is no IP rating, so the build is not rated against water or dust.

How does it compare with the other pairs we tested?

The XM5 keeps the same 30 h battery, 250 g weight and LDAC support.

Against the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (8.6, $449), the XM6 matches on price and adds LDAC and LC3, where the Ultra lists SBC, AAC and aptX Adaptive. The Ultra lists 30 h, 250 g, folding, a 2.5 mm and USB-C audio input, and a 2025 second-generation release.

The QuietComfort is lighter at 240 g and uses physical buttons.

Against the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless (8.9, $379.95), the XM6 is behind on overall score. The Momentum 4 lists a 60 h battery, 293 g, SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX Adaptive, multipoint, no folding, a 3.5 mm input and an August 2022 release.

Against the Anker Soundcore Space One (7.9, $99.99), the XM6 costs far more but the Space One lists 40 h, 265 g, SBC, AAC and LDAC, multipoint, folding, a 3.5 mm input and an August 2023 release.

Where does the Sony WH-1000XM6 fall short?

Price is the first issue: $449.99 at launch, and the value criterion returned 10 out of 15. The review's own summary of where it lost is value. The second is tuning — the sound is warm out of the box and needs the EQ, which is why sound quality scored 22 out of 25 rather than higher. The third is the missing IP rating, so there is no water or dust protection rating on the spec sheet.

Is the Sony WH-1000XM6 worth $449.99?

The price summary is $449.99. The value score is 10 out of 15, measured as street price against the field. For context, the tested rivals sit at $379.95 for the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless, $349 for the Bose QuietComfort Headphones, $449 for the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, $399.99 for the Sony WH-1000XM5 and $99.99 for the Anker Soundcore Space One. The XM6 is the joint most expensive pair in that group alongside the Bose Ultra.

Who should buy the Sony WH-1000XM6?

Commuters and flyers who want one pair for everything. If you take calls on the move, want the cancelling to hold up against cabin and train noise, and want the headphones to fold into a bag, the XM6 is the pair the test ranked highest for that combination. If the $449.99 price is the deciding factor, the XM5 at $399.99 keeps most of the cancelling and calls without the folding hinge.
