The Five Car Seat Installation Mistakes a Technician Sees Most

  1. Loose install. More than an inch of movement at the belt path. Belt-tensioning seats (Britax ClickTight, Chicco KeyFit, Evenflo Revolve360 base) fix this mechanically.
  2. Wrong recline for a newborn. Too upright and the head drops. Use the bubble or line indicator; the KeyFit and PIPA bases have levels.
  3. Harness too loose or chest clip too low. Pinch test at the collarbone; clip at armpit level. No-rethread harnesses (every seat here except the Radian) make height adjustment easier.
  4. LATCH past its weight limit. When child plus seat exceeds the limit on the label (often 65 lb), switch to the belt.
  5. Top tether forgotten forward-facing. It cuts head movement by inches. Every forward-facing seat here has one.
