What separates the top LegalZoom alternatives?

Four services made the cut, and the scores track what you actually pay and what you get back. Northwest Registered Agent leads at 9.1 for $39: it puts its own address on the public record where the state allows, keeps your home address off it, and runs one upsell screen in the whole checkout. Bizee sits at 8.3 with a $0 package plus state fee and a free first year of registered agent service, $119 after. ZenBusiness scores 8.0 on the same $0 plus state fee, with the clearest dashboard of the group. Rocket Lawyer is 7.5 at $99.99 for the filing alone, but its $39.99 monthly membership covers unlimited legal documents and 30-minute attorney consultations.

The scoring criteria weight true first-year cost at 30, renewal cost at 20, filing and compliance service at 20, checkout transparency at 15, and support and extras at 15. That is why a $0 headline does not automatically win.

What should I check before buying?

Start with the renewal bill, not the signup price. Bizee's registered agent is free for a year, then $119. ZenBusiness charges $199 a year from day one, the most expensive here. Northwest's $39 is not the $0 competitors advertise, and its EIN costs $50 even though the IRS issues one free in ten minutes.

Then count the upsell screens. Bizee runs four, and the operating agreement and EIN sit behind the $199 Gold package. ZenBusiness's standard filing took ten business days, with faster options costing more. Rocket Lawyer's membership auto-renews after the trial, so cancel if you only wanted the filing.

  • Check whether the registered agent is included or billed yearly.
  • Check whether the EIN and operating agreement are included or upsold.
  • Check the filing speed you get at the base price.
  • Check how the renewal notice arrives — Bizee's comes as an invoice, not an offer.

Northwest Registered Agent

For anyone who wants their home address off the public record and a checkout with one clearly priced upsell. The $39 and the $50 EIN are the trade-off.

Bizee

For the cheapest real filing: year one cost nothing beyond the state fee, and the dashboard tracks annual report deadlines.

ZenBusiness

For owners who want filings, deadlines, documents and money tools in one account, plus Worry-Free Compliance filing the annual report. Budget for the $199 registered agent.

Rocket Lawyer

For anyone who will also need leases, NDAs and contractor agreements, with 30-minute attorney consultations included in the $39.99 monthly membership.

Northwest Registered Agent suits buyers who want their address kept off the public record and a clean checkout at $39. Bizee is the pick if first-year cost matters most, since year one runs nothing beyond the state fee. ZenBusiness fits owners who want filings, deadlines and money tools in one dashboard, and Rocket Lawyer makes sense when you also need legal documents and attorney consultations.

Questions about best legalzoom alternatives

Do I need a formation service at all?
No. Every state lets you file articles of organisation yourself on its Secretary of State website, and in most states it takes about twenty minutes. A service is worth paying for when you want a registered agent whose address is not your home, when you are forming in a state you do not live in, or when you want the annual-report reminders. The state fee is the same either way.
Why is the "$0 LLC" not free?
The $0 refers to the service's own fee. You still pay the state: about $40 in Kentucky, $50 in Arizona and Colorado, $100 in Texas plus franchise obligations, $200 in New York before publication costs, $500 in Massachusetts. Free packages also usually include only year one of registered agent service, after which the renewal — $119 to $249 a year — is where the money is made.
What does a registered agent actually do?
They accept legal papers and state notices on your business's behalf at a physical address in the state during business hours. You can be your own, but then your home address goes on the public record and someone must be there. Northwest and Bizee include the first year; from year two the market rate is $100 to $200.
How do you test LLC formation services?
We order the same single-member LLC through each service at its advertised entry package, decline every upsell we do not need, and record the total charged, the number of upsell screens, the date the state approved the articles, and what the renewal notice asks for. We read the operating agreement each one produces and call support with the same two questions.
