Smoke is two problems
Fine particles (PM2.5), which HEPA removes, and gases and odour, which only substantial activated carbon reduces. Thin carbon pre-filters do almost nothing for the second.
From our ranking
- Best all-round for smoke: Levoit Core 600S (airflow) or Winix 5500-2 (real carbon).
- Whole floor: Coway Airmega 400.
- Avoid for smoke: Blueair 211i Max and Honeywell HPA300 — strong on particles, weak on gases.
On a smoke day
- Close windows; run the purifier on high in the room you occupy, then medium.
- Change or wash pre-filters weekly during the event.
- Expect to replace the main filter early — check the indicator.
- A box fan with a MERV-13 furnace filter taped on is a proven emergency stand-in.
