Air Purifiers for Wildfire Smoke: What Works and What to Run

Why smoke needs airflow and carbon, the units in our ranking that handled it, and the settings for a smoke day.

Smoke is two problems

Fine particles (PM2.5), which HEPA removes, and gases and odour, which only substantial activated carbon reduces. Thin carbon pre-filters do almost nothing for the second.

From our ranking

  • Best all-round for smoke: Levoit Core 600S (airflow) or Winix 5500-2 (real carbon).
  • Whole floor: Coway Airmega 400.
  • Avoid for smoke: Blueair 211i Max and Honeywell HPA300 — strong on particles, weak on gases.

On a smoke day

  1. Close windows; run the purifier on high in the room you occupy, then medium.
  2. Change or wash pre-filters weekly during the event.
  3. Expect to replace the main filter early — check the indicator.
  4. A box fan with a MERV-13 furnace filter taped on is a proven emergency stand-in.
