Air Fryer Sizes: Why the Quart Rating Lies

We weighed the fries that actually fit in one layer in every machine. The numbers do not follow the box.

What we weighed

Frozen fries in a single layer, which is the only way an air fryer crisps properly: Ninja DualZone 640 g, COSORI 5.8 qt 505 g, Philips 6.2 qt 495 g, Ninja Max XL 5.5 qt 480 g, Instant Vortex 6 qt 470 g, Cuisinart oven 420 g, Dash 2 qt 280 g.

The pattern

The 5.5 qt Ninja held nearly as much as the 6.2 qt Philips, and the 0.6 cu ft Cuisinart oven held less than both despite being far bigger on the counter. Basket shape and airflow decide single-layer area, not volume.

Sizing by household

  • One person: 2–3 qt. About 280 g a batch.
  • Two people: 5–6 qt. One batch of chips and a protein, in turns.
  • Family of four: a dual basket or 8 qt+. Anything smaller means cooking in rounds and eating in shifts.
  • Replacing a toaster oven: an oven style, and accept slower crisping.

Two things to measure before you buy

Cabinet clearance above the counter — several of these are taller than they look — and the depth including the space the hot air needs behind them, which most makers put at five inches.
